Could someone assist me with figuring out what happened to this 1940 nickel? I really have no idea what happened to the 0 in the date. Is this something from the mint? Post mint?

That's damage to the coin - half the relief of the lower half of the zero got pushed upward making that line. Possibly by a coin counting machine.
