I'd be glad to give anyone the prices from way back then, so everyone can compare inflation or just how much of a price difference there is haha.

I collect those Red Books and have every one from 1947 to present. Odd thing is I was there to buy them when they first came out.
Ever wonder why the date on the cover is a year in advance? For example this year, 2011 in April, the 2012 Edition will come out.

No, but please tell us. And yes I am serious if you really know because it's a neat conversation piece. But then, it's probably divulged some where in the book itself. I never seem to read the book cover to cover when I buy them.

Also, why does Coin World publish their magazine with a forward date as well. Once printed, everything is instantly ancient history anyway.

Exactly why they are so rare and expensive.

Not to long ago I thought I'd help out Whitman Publishing by sending them emails about all the errors I find in that Red Book. I made a real long list and sent it to them. One of my little questions, not a correction, was why are you people putting a date on your Red Book a year in advance? Makes no sence since if you put a 1987 date on the book and it is being sold in 1986, this just comfuses people.
Actually got not only replys from Whitman, but was sent a book on Morgan dollars free for my attempt to help.
The Publisher, Dennis Tucker, explained that the first edition came out in 1946 with a 1947 date on it and that has continued to this day. As he noted no one complains when you see a car come out in August of a year with the following years date on it. Sort of how they feel at Whitman. And so in about April of 2011 you will now see the new Red Book with a date of 2012 on the cover. Just basically tradition according to the Publisher.

OK! I gotta say, that's the best story I've ever heard. Why not indeed. In a line from the musical "Dog Patch", "What's good for General Bull Moose, is good for the USA!" Why not project out. Great revelation. Anecdotes like this is why we joined the forum. Priceless, absolutely priceless.

(Incidentally, Al Capp was musing about the arrogance of General Motors in his quip.) Why things occur is often determined by some random decision.
