or was it a flawed planchet when it was struck? either way, for this coin to float around since 1961 and end up being given to me in change today seems like kind of a long shot.

Sure looks like a killer lamination to me, you can see further lamination damage on the back of abes head.

Yes, it is a lamination which is caused by a flaw in the planchet. I am surprised that big flapper has survived intact.
