Hey all. I just wanted to see if I have a genuine coin here of if I got one that's been plated. I've done some research and I was originally thinking that it was just a plated penny. But I then discovered that it stick to a magnet. Which if it does that's a clue that it could be genuine.

Here's some pictures. It's not in the best shape:

Does it stick like a 1943 Steel Cent would to a magnet? Plated coins will show some attraction to a magnet, but not as strong as a steel cent. Check it out and see?

I currently don't have any steel 1943 silver pennies to check it with. Should it stay on a fridge magnet if I hold it vertical?

You have a genuine coin that has been plated. Remember that 1944 cents made of copper are genuine...but they can be altered, like yours.

He mentioned that it stuck to a magnet.
It would be a very strong magnetic attraction if steel.
Will wait also I guess

Refrigerated magnets are usually fairly weak. But if you have a regular magnet a steel cent will JUMP to it and hold tight.

After playing around with some stronger magnets, I'm pretty sure it's plated. It will stick to the magnet, but it won't stay there. Thanks for the replies.

For anyone who doesn't have a magnet handy, remember that electric can openers have magnets to catch onto the tops.

One of the most useful impulses I ever had was to remove and keep the magnet from an old can opener that died on me and I tossed out. That magnet, strong one, is a VERY handy thing to have around, especially with hands grasp & picking things up problems (like mine) or finding straight pins or thumb tacks dropped on the floor or rug .........
