Hello...

I am wondering what some of you fine commem folks think of Mr Grant here... He is in a raw state with tons of luster. I had to do some soft lighting in order to show more details. He is also fairly bagmark free and the reverse seems nearly mark free. There is a light scrape right in front of his eyes that is not really distracting in hand.

Thoughts-On-Mr.-US-Grant??

Here is a HUGE IMAGE

Thank you in advance...

I like the obverse but the reverse is disappointing to me. Not the design but the choice of subject. Here is a man who led the preservation of the union and they chose the log cabin as the "theme". IMO there are so many other things that would have been more interesting.

I do like the reverse, but not so much for this coin... you are right... when you think of Grant, you do not think "log cabin". He makes such a great portrait in his dusty uniform... perhaps the image of him at the top of lookout mountain would be nice for the reverse.

Yes, I have to get these one at a time and try and find deals but most of the classic commemoratives are very appealing.

Nice photos of a great classic silver commemorative.

Net mintage was 67,405 coins ... over 27,000 were melted due to lack of interest at the time from buyers. Original purchase price was $1.50.

This coin was designed by one of the all-time finest USA coin designers .... Laura G. Fraser.

The reverse shows Grant's log cabin birthplace surrounded by huge trees .... despite the opinions stated above I believe this is a fabulous piece of USA coinage art.

I say your coin is a well preserved piece of history ..... MS64 or better .... lovely.

Thanks for sharing the coin and photos.

Thank you for the reply... and for all of the info! I did not know that Laura Fraser designed the US Grant commemorative. She and her husband designed many of my absolute favorites... She did the Oregon Trail correct, or was that a collaboration?

Thank you also for the historical numbers and your grade opinion. I guess I did pretty well after such a long wait to find one at a good price. I will keep the good General around for a long time.

Correct ...

There is some debate in Numismatic circles regarding the actual obverse versus reverse of the Oregon Trail series ...

The Mint claims the Wagon side as the obverse as it shows the date and the Indian as the reverse as it shows the mint mark (if any) of the branch mint involved in striking the coins of this long running series.

For me .... I choose to accept the Indian as the obverse and the Wagon as the reverse ..... and so ...

Laura G. Fraser designed the obverse (Indian) and her husband James E. Fraser designed the reverse (Wagon).

Sorry if I'm heading towards off-topic here on your Grant thread.
