Found this nice 1955 in a roll of nickels this morning and wanted to show it off. Anyone have an idea as to how this would grade? The pictures don't do it justice. Edited by mountainman 2 01/24/2011 5:34 pm

Very Cool, I agree with the above grade Impaired Proof 60-62 from the pictures available I really get a kick out of finding proofs in circulation.

Thank you both, it's going into a holder.

I'm not convinced it is a proof, it is certainly well struck and an a coin struck early in the life of the die, but the detail is still lacking on that reverse. I would say it is proof-like and a great find especially for that year.

I feel like an idiot for asking but I am new to collecting, how do you know it is a proof?

It doesn't jump out at me and say "I'm a proof" with obvious mirror surfaces but I'm not the one holding the coin. Definitely a super 55 Jefferson for sure and a nice find.

proofs from 1964 and earlier are tough to identify when pulled from circulation, but there should be mirror finish on both sides of the coin. They ofter are easier to differentiate by sight than from photos from prooflikes (which are also rare). One easy way to tell is to look at the sharpness of the strike on the steps. Proofs should generally have extremely well struck steps, while a prooflike might have mushy steps. Odds are id say that this is a proof, but like the others above said its tough to tell. It might actually be worth more than a proof if a tgp designated it as prooflike, since there are very few designated as such. -XoG

The amount of overall detail of the design can be lacking on proofs from this era. I think this is a proof now with the closeup image supplied. Not just because of the full steps but because of some similarities in the pillar bases, and lettering of MONTICELLO that are the same on a proof I looked at and your nickel. I think it would have to be PF55 or PR58 at best but a cool find for sure.
