Hey guys, Another one with the sellers photos, as I cant get my camera set up yet. Anyway, what do you all think the grade of this one. I am just learning, so this is a tough one to me. Could it make the AU under there standards, or does it fall way way lower. The problem I am having is that the write up descriptions of the grades leave such a margin of error. It is totally an opinion, and there is no sway either direction, so that is why this site is great, at least if it is graded low, your heart gets smashed in front of lots of spectators. lol....anyway, what are all your thoughtsÉ

I hope these pics do it justice, but none of the 1000`s of his pictures show any luster, they all look flat, but in hand they shine!

I think this one is a little to worn to be AU but it could very well be EF-40-45

Here's a slabbed AU-50 for comparison this one went for about $130. For a different date I think it might grade lower but the 84-S's aren't exactly hammer strikes:

That means the seller is using a scanner to image the coins. With these images, I would grade it EF45. If I saw photographs that showed luster, I might bump it to AU50- luster is very important in this grade range. For most coins, EF45-AU50 seems like splitting hairs but the 1884S is a conditional rarity in AU-MS grades so those five points can mean a significant difference in value.

Be careful with these Kempire because that coin looks cleaned. With the level of wear exhibited here, a coin shouldn't be completely free of surface contamination and/or toning and I wouldn't pay over $30 for it. EF Details - cleaned.

I'm going to say EF-45, but it just might slide to AU-50.

Not enough evidence in these scans to say this coin is cleaned. If the coin is shiny in hand but has no cartwheel, that is a dead giveaway. I'd recommend you request better photos before buying to be more sure.

I would have said AU-50, but I agree that it has no luster at all. Any better pics?

I believe otherwise, and here's why:

Look closely around the stars, the date, and the denticles at 3:00. On the reverse, "In God we trust," areas in the wreath, the "ER" of "AMERICA" and many of the denticles show what might be crud nearest the feature. If that's crud and not the scan (I'm not 100% sure), this coin has been cleaned very carefully but started out pretty dirty. If it *is* crud, most of the other details should show similar crud. Yet they don't.

Even though many of us consider non-invasive things like mild soap and water to be acceptable methods of conserving coins, there are times when you just can't mess with an original coin without getting over your head. This is such a time, if what I see is actually on the coin. I don't believe a TPG would slab this one, even without overt visible marks from "cleaning."

The coin shows to much wear in the photo to be AU. XF45 is the best grade.

It seems all of the coin you have shown lately with the red backgrounds look the same. My guess is they have all received the same type of cleaning, care or preparation.

I'd like to see photos of this one scans do not always portray color, luster, "crud", and other toning accurately
