This coin belongs to a close friend. It is not for sale. Yet. If it was I likely would have bought it, and then it would definitely not be for sale. It is a 1955 silver quarter with doubling on the date and on the upper antlers. According to Trends there is a Double Die Reverse which they claim is rare, and it lists no prices. I looked in the 2011 Charlton catalog and it has a picture which shows similar effects on the details we have here, and none other. It is listed as 1955 DD, again with no prices. I must return this coin tomorrow night so I was hoping on getting some input. Do you think this is the rare coin they are referring to? What would this coin be worth in your collection? It is an uncirculated coin; would you send it in to be graded/attributed? Thank you for your input.

Canadian circulation quarters were 80% silver until 1967. In 1967 some of the quarters were made from 50% silver as well. In 1968 a change was made to nickel, but some were still made from 50% silver that year.
1870 - 1919 = 92.5% silver 1920 - 1967 = 80% silver 1967 - 1968 = 50% silver 1968 - 2000 = nickel 2001 - present = nickel and/or steel

Quote: these dates are for both quarters and dimes ? Yes. Please note that I had made a typo and I have correct 93.5% to 92.5%. Quote: Am I the friend? A friend, yes. The friend, sorry Scooby. Not this time.

While I'm not the expert that Canadians here are on these issues...if there is separation between doubling on the antler points on the caribou and the date (5), then it must be a doubled die.

Those pics help! I see the "notching" or separation on the antlers and 5--that looks like a DDO to me

It is doubling without a doubt. It is Hub Doubling on the Reverse. The 2011 charlton Catalog does not have a price for it becuse they don't have enough data. If I were to price it, I would say $25 at MS-60. Adjust the price for each grade as you see fit, or wait untill its updated or droped from future editions.

Quote: wait untill its updated or droped from future editions. Thank Cubro99. Updated would be good, dropped, not so much. For anyone that does not have a Charlton, the current value for the normal 1955 quarter at MS60 is 15, MS63 is 30. Trends shows it as $9 (MS60), and and $18 (MS63).

This coin with " Hub doubling " is very rare : you can see an article about this coin, in the " World Coin News, january 2009, page 40-41, by Ken Potter. I know that one of them, certified MS-64, was sold for $ 750.00 .
More, I know that an other similar " Hub doubling " exist for the 25 cents 1953.

That last set of pics shows the separation much better. Don't know how I missed the last update. I was wondering what the outcome was. Nice rikcando!

I didn't catch it the first time, but the denticles clearly show doubling too in the first pic.
