I actually got a buffalo in change at a gas station about a month ago.
I couldn't believe it. It was like getting a little jewel. It wasn't rare or nothing. Still it doesn't happen everyday.

Doucet - Was the gas station in northeast Ohio? I sometimes spend a dateless or cull Buffalo nickel in vending machines. Part of me gets a kick out of the fact that they still work just as good as Jeffersons. Also...it makes the Pepsi or the Snickers bar taste better!

Yes and I remember how those Silver Washington quarters and Franklin halves were so valuable to me as coin of the realm to purchase important things like baseball cards. I want to kick myself when I see the empty holes I knew were filled at one point in time. Good thing I didn't see much value in popping out the pennies and spending them.

I'm old enough to qualify for this thread (born in 1959), but as a kid money didn't stay in my pocket long enough to remember what it was.

Doucet, I get up that way occasionally, if I get advance notice of the next trip it would be cool to meet you, I really enjoy meeting forum members, and to have one so close in the same state is a rare treat.

Youngsters today have it easy! They carry quarters that only weigh in at a measly 5.67 grams. The ones I had to lug around when I was nine were a whopping 6.25 grams, each! Add that to the fact that in my day we didn't have air and we didn't have gravity. We had to hold our breath and hang on!

I am over 50, born in '58. I too spent my early coin collection on baseball cards, have only a few of the items from the 60's and 70's when I was collecting. I do have a large pot of pennies that I have saved over the past few decades and I know the Wheaties stopped being made in 1959, but when did the mint stop using copper and zinc in the pennies? Is that 1981?

The cent changed from a sort of bronze (mostly copper with a little zinc and tin) to copper plated zinc during 1982. Both types of cents were made in volume that year.

Thank you Clair for clearing that up for me. I guess those prior zinc penny have more copper in them and therefore have more intrinsic value.

Bearcoinin I hope the baseball cards you bought were Mickey Mantle or Pete Rose rookie cards. Back then I was spending $2.10 for a carton of cigarettes, the same price of a proof set.
