Hi, I've got what appears to be an 1875 Halfpenny with a wide date.

I can't seem to find any reference to it in my spink book.
Can anyone help with the reference / identification ?

It's not in the best condition. It's the (green) coin on the right.

Hello, chris, and welcome to the forum!
I have the Coincraft, and it doesn't talk about date width varieties for 1/2d in 1875 either.

For 1874 there are varieties:
- regular (that would be wide date)
- narrow date
- modified obverse, regular
- modified obverse, narrow date
- narrow date, "H" below the date
- narrow date, "H" below the date, thick flan
- narrow date, "H" below the date, Proof.

For 1875 we have only:
- regular
- "H" below the date; by the way, don't I see a hint of "H" under and between 8 and 7?
- "H" below the date, thick flan
- "H" below the date, Proof.

Pennies, though, had width varieties for both 1874 and 75. So, at this point, I'm not really sure what to tell you.

It looks like the green patinated coin has the small H below the date for Heaton mint. If so, then the two coins are very different issues so should not be compared. The spacing of the date does vary but is only listed in catalogues when a significant difference is detected for coins from the same mint bearing the same date. Chris Wren
