I've tried this one before, but I'm hoping that some fresh eyes may see it.:

Cartwheel-Twopence-With-Countermark.

Has anyone seen this mark before?

Thanks,
Bob

reminds of some "love tokens" that I've seen:
The initials might be the lovers;
the date might be some milestone or other.
These are very collectible in Oz.
I saw an exhibition of "love tokens" from the convict era (1788~1868) in the museum in Hobart, about 9 or 10 years ago.
I suggest that you google "love tokens". I think that there may have been a book published ...

see Item number: 200582845408 on a well=known-auction-site.

Thanks Peter. I must admit that at first I thought that you were way off the mark. The stamping looked too professional and machine made.
Now that I've followed up on your suggestion and Googled, I can see that there's a strong chance you're right.
Cheers.

This is indeed almost certainly a 'personal' stamping having meaning only to the person who did it. There are many examples too of 'commercial' countermarks (one for the Lloyds Weekly Newspaper is quite common) and then there is a large series of 'convict' tokens often made by or on behalf of those languishing in prisons, transported or executed. Other areas include political countermarks or engravings, ranging from caricature to denouncing various public scandals. Many of these are very collectible and they can command quite high prices. There are a few examples of various types in the TimeLine Auctions sale in London on 18th March 2011 (see https://www.timelineauctions.com under Miscellaneous coins). Chris Wren

chris wren, how do I say Thank you, and I wish you'd never posted in the same sentence?
The information is great, however the potential damage to my pocket from that upcoming auction is disasterous.
All the same, many thanks,
Bob

Hmm! I had no wish to cause serious damage to anyone's pocket book! - although I did observe that such things can be expensive. It's all good fun and, personally, I really like the Fauntleroy banking example - definitely appropriate for the present day! If you do have a go for any of them, I do wish you luck! Chris Wren

I thought it might be. Well, as I said, Good Luck with it. I can tell you that it will go for more than £250 though! Chris Wren
