I'm from Canada and I have an extensive collection of Canadian and American circulation coins, and lately I've been trying to branch out and start collecting coins from other countries as well. I recently struck up correspondence with collectors from other countries like UK and Indonesia to trade coins from other countries. I always thought Australian coins would be a fun addition to my collection (I have a 1950 Australian penny that I acquired many years ago). Any suggestions on where I should start?

That all depends upon where your interests lie. Australian coinage is broken into two main categories, pre-decimal (1910 - 1964) and decimal (1966 to present).

Pre-decimal coins can be expensive to pursue if you want grades above Vf by Australian grading standards, but they are a rewarding choice because the hunt is harder, especially if you like to build date sets. However, unless you have plenty of money, you will have to be satisfied with a couple of incomplete sets, as a few coins are very pricey, even in low grades.

Decimal coins are much easier, as they haven't been around for very long, so high grade examples are easy to find and for the most part are inexpensive.
You can still build complete date sets from circulation for 5c and up. I put together two complete sets for my kids in 2009 from circulation. Now I have another one on the way, so I have to do it all again this year. 1c and 2c coins have been abolished, but can still be found with little effort.

This site is a good one to help you choose what you may like to collect. http://www.cruzis-coins.com/

I am very, very partial to Australian 1 ounce silver bullion. The Koalas, Kookaburras and Kangaroos. The design details are magnificent. A little spendy, but to me, worth every cent. Very limited mintage on the Kangaroos, but absolutley a very worthwhile set to obtain.
The Australians really know their stuff when it comes to producing a stunning coin. You'll be proud to own them.

pk_boomer: This is a current live Australian postal auction that I am going to bid in:

www.ausnumis.com.au

You never know, I may have you as bidding competition!

There are 5137 lots with 27 Canadian and 79 American lots, 227 lots of ancients, 400 lots of British, about 1500 lots of Australian, about 1500 banknote lots.

Even if you don't want to bid, you will certainly learn a lot about how the Australian numismatic market works.

I have every auction catalogue from this source for the last 12 years.

Hi !

PK_boomer : I have about the same idea that you, where are you in Canada ?

I also collect stamps and my first country after Canada that I collect was Australia. I already have the idea to try to find some coin's of Australia, I already have 2 or 3 pre-decimal penny ( I think) but not more.

For myself I collect Canada little bite more seriously but I also collect circulated USA penny and nickel for fun, it's not expensive... Probably the same thing for any country !

The problem is with the new rules for trade, buy and sell I can not post any add to find other collector to help me, I can buy on ebay or other place like that but with the fee here and is the cheaper coin's are now more expensive. THe fact the coin's some weight, the shipping can be expensive.... 1 or 2$ are not so "expensive" but the letter most contain at less few dollard to cover the shipping price.... anyway !

If anyone have some gift to send lol or have information on place that I can find inexpensive coin's at good price, I'm open the check them.

Thanks !

Thank you all for the information... if I do start collecting Australian coins, I will most certainly start with the circulation decimals as my budget doesn't really allow me to get into the pricy stuff. Frankly I'd like to start with coins I can get for close to face value :) So sel_69l, you won't have to worry about any bidding competition from me!

Yves, I will send you an email.

G'day, it's 8.10am, and I see that the forecast for today is -
H 34°
L 24° Late thunder
that's Celsius ... of course.

How's this for a deal: I send you USD $10.00 worth of Australian coins;
and in return, you send me USD $10.00 worth of Canadian coins; and
we each pay our own postage.

I'll make sure that all denominations, and all obverses are covered, and I'll make up the balance of the $10-equivalent with commemoratives.
All coins will be taken from circulation, but they'll be clean (not cleaned) and not unduly worn. In fact, I put aside all the better coins that I find in my change or by noodling, just to have a store for swaps.

No hurry, I won't be having any trips for a while.

This offer is open to anyone who is interested in acacquiring Australian coins.

I pretty much need recent commemorative (circulation) 20c, 50c, $1's. Any recent NZes too if they are around. I have only 5c and 20c with Ian Rank-Broadley's queen (I'm talking NZ). But I shouldn't be too picky.

Hi Peter,

I would gladly take you up on that. I don't have any Aussie coins aside from the 1950 penny, so any decimal coins would be welcome. Ultimately I would like to get a complete decimal set, so anything that gets me started towards that goal would be perfect. What do you need in terms of Canadian coins? I also have an extensive US coin collection as well if you need any.

Sorry yves, I wasn't able to send you a PM or email either. Not sure why it wasn't working. Just email me at pk_boomer <at> hotmail.
