Hi, I was wondering if anyone out there had any suggestions regarding the storage of coins in the house. I have my more valuable coins in a safe deposit box and keep moisture proof cannisters inside them. I currently have 3 large plastic bins in my house with sets that I am currently working on, bullion coins as well as a bunch of miscellaneous stuff. I am worried the plastic could do some long term damage. I have moisture proof materials in them but am worried about the plastic. I have a bunch of smaller type containers but would like to replace the large ones. Does anybody have suggestions about better containers or ways to store them?

Could use a little more information though. For instance do you live in a high humidity area of the country? Do you keep your coins in a basement? First floor? Windows and doors open a lot? Do you have or is there a pool near your home that is Chlorinated? Are your coins in Albums or Folders and if so, what brand? Do you live in an area where Sulfur Rich Coal is burned in power stations or steel mills? As to the plastic bins you have your coins stored in, you really should have kept the manufacturers information from them so you could contact them as to what their products are made from. It is possible they could be made with PVC, ABS, recycled anything or almost anything. The main problems for coins is humidity, gasses in the air, temperates. Those plstic bins could hold in as much humidity instead of just keeping it out. That too is a problem people don't realize is true of a safe also. You close the door and keep in whatever was in the area at the time. If you can not keep humidity out of your house, you must find a method of keeping it from your coins. I've found keeping my doors and windows closed all the time and an electric dehumidifier on all the time really does the thing. Such a dehumidifier has a humidity control so it is on only when you need to get humidity down. I also have an electonic air cleaning system on my furnace so that helps also. Again though, more information is required.

take them out of the plastic box's first.you can get a good safe cheaply. the moisture pads are a good thought but will not stop the pvc from attacking your coins

I have a question about coin storage also. I have glass jars full of wheat cents and other misc. coins. All of the jars have tops on them. Nothing in the jars have a lot of monetary value but I do want to keep them. Am I doing them more harm than good by keeping them in the glass jars? If so then what should I keep bulk wheat cents in?

Glass jar storage is fine for bulk Wheat cent storage, you may want to add a small pack of silica gel to each jar to keep them dry.

As noted the glass will not effect your coins. HOWEVER, remember when you open and close the lid, whatever was in the area is now trapped in the jar. Those little Gel packs for moisture control will help. And the less air in the jar, the less air, moisture, gasses there will be in that jar so fill it with as many coins as possible. More coins, less air.

Hi Carl, thank you for the response. I do not have a pool and humidity is not a big issue as I live in Northeast PA. As far as the bins go, they are from Rubbermaid and I can try to find out what they are made of. I did purchase a small safe today but that will only hold a small part of what I have. The coins that are in folders are in older Library of Coins and some Intercept (for some of the better stuff). I also have a bunch of Dansco albums. I have a fondness for the Library Of Coins albums. I have to see if Intercept shield makes plastic slides that I can use in them in place of what came in them years ago although I do get some pretty toning on some coins that have been in the Library albums for a number of years. I am thinking I should get all of them out of the plastic bins. Anyone have any thoughts on wooden trunks?
