The scan is terrible. This coin has luster for days!
Would anyone care to give me some help with the grade.
If it is junk, it's junk and I can live with that but
I this nickel in person, as I said scan does it no justice but
the best I can do. Thanks for any help!

It has all that luster because this is a Proof-strike coin.

Nice find from a roll. For sure a keeper.

The last circulation strike San Francisco mint Jefferson was struck in 1970 (there are also 1970-S Proof Jefferson).

Your 1980-S has a mintage of 3,554,806 coins.

Somebody cracked this out of a US Mint proof set and it found it's way to you.

Now ... take a closer look at the coin in hand ... notice the mirror surfaces ... the bold strike ... and the cameo surfaces on Jefferson and Monticello? These are all characteristics of a proof strike coin.

Grading is difficult from your photos .... perhaps PR64? That's just a guess on my part.

What you do have here is a lovely roll-found proof Jefferson.

YEAH!! I thought so but I didn't want to make the rookie mistake of calling it a proof when it was just a shiny coin!
Thanks so much for the info Nickelsearcher. Dang it, this is going to make it hard to slow down the roll hunting haha

That's the spirit!

Enjoy nickel searching for the tremendous variety of finds possible .... proof coins, old coins, silver coins, foreign coins .... and a true possibility of completing the entire circulation strike set from bank rolls.

I commend to all the humble nickel.

Come join us at the long running nickel searching thread and share the joy.

As said, the tip here is that a 1980-S nickel would always be a proof strike. A 1970-S nickel, for example, could be a proof or circulation strike; additional diagnostics would be required. Nice find!
