The 2011 Silver Wolf coin debuted on September 9, 2010. 1 oz .9999 fine silver bullion coin features a unique design, limited 1,000,000 mintage and a $5 face value. It is one in a minimum of six to launch at a rate of two each year (through 2013) that will showcase a distinct Canadian wildlife theme. The second coin, the Grizzly, is discussed here: https://goccf.com/t/79862----------- Picture, courtesy of the Royal Canadian Mint. Edited by canadian_coins 01/29/2011 8:17 pm

I really don't like the wolf design. The body/leg proportions are all wrong and there is a few other "problems". Don't take it the wrong way though. I am picky out artwork. Thanks for posting C_C and K_H I hope you enjoy your coin - it was just my personal opinion.
Edit WW is Senior Mint Engraver William Woodruff. Maybe wildlife isn't his thing?

I agree with Realpenny. The artwork is lacking. One million minted. Big deal. It's a fad. I would be more inclined to invest in the Australian Silver Kangaroo series started in 1993. All are under 80,000 minted. And you just cannot beat the Australians when it comes to coin design and workmanship.

realpenny...yes I will agree with you on this one..The wolf isn't great art..to my eye either I'm sure others would disagree..but as a newer collector it's nice to be able to start collecting an announced new series from the start...the new grizzle is better... Any art form is always a personal choice...like they say " every eye See's it own special vision"and yes I'm glad to own the wolf and soon the grizzle.

Speaking of "ART" check out the new "America the Beautiful" coins. Wow. Looks like they were designed by a 3rd grader. The United States can claim true artistic quality though with the Walking Liberty half, the reverse of the 1971-1974,1977-1978 Eisenhower dollar and the 2009 Ultra High Relief Double Eagle. Other than that....

I really like the wolf have a couple of them and will be getting some of the grizzles also. More than likely will get the whole set.

I especially love the hillside part of the coin where the wolf is standing. Looks better in hand.

I will clarify for everyone so it is hopefully clear where I am coming from about "art". I will talk about three coins we are currently talking about in the forum. William Woodruff is an engraver. He does things as varied as trains to wolves. He is no doubt a great engraver. That does not mean he is a great wildlife artist. I think the wolf was done by more of an engraver and not a wildlife/natural history artist and I have stated why. Celia Godkin is a trained illustrator. She does botanical art. Her artwork is well done and it shows. I do not like that the mint had her work around the crystal though. Her artwork is easily good enough to stand on it's own without the crystal. The thread is here: https://goccf.com/t/78532The 1/25th gold coin geese this year was done by Emily Damstra a natural history illustrator and trained in the field. She has done lots of wildlife and is talented in the field and it shows looking at her work. The thread is here: https://goccf.com/t/78025I think it would be better for the RCM to use experts in their respected fields. I think the coins will be way better that way and the art will really be beautiful and accurate. I can only draw stick men - I am terrible at art personally. I got my information from searching on the internet using the peoples names.

Great post penny. Celia was featured in the 2009 Master Club's catalog. She's a Bachelor in Zoology. I thought the engravers did a pretty good job on the 2009 $5 silver coin - 80th Anniversary of Canada in Japan.

Yes realpenny your post about the artists was very interesting..Thanks

I am surprised it sold out actually. This is one thing also to remember, the web content is driven by one department and they are sometimes lagging - even disconnected at times with customer services. Typical of many businesses... So please call. I was able to get coins they still had in stock well after the coin was pulled from the web. Humans are still around.
