Hi, I find this photograph facinating.... It was a meeting of most of the German State rulers in 1863.  My project (which won't be cheap) is to obtain a representative coin for each (all bar one at any rate) of the rulers pictured here. It's amazing to think that of the 28 rulers here only 5 did not issue coins and 4 of those are actually mayors of cities and I can get a representative coin of that city. The vast majority of these will be the 1 thaler coin. There are present.... 1 Emperor 3 Kings 1 Elector 9 Princes 6 Grand Dukes 4 Dukes 4 Free City Mayors To date I have only one, John of Saxony...  Johann 1859 1 Thaler Ob. IOHANN V. G. G. KOENIG VON SACHESEN Rev. EIN VEREINSTHALER XXX EIN PFUND FEIN Silver 0.9000 18.520g mintage: 2,490,000 Mint: Dresden MM: Gustav Theodor Fischer but hopefully I'll be able to add to this over time - perhaps one every couple of months or so. I'll never get a thaler from Lichteinstein as they are very rare but I should be able to get a portrait coin for John II from the turn of the century or so. I have a web-page set up - a corner of my Diadumenian site - and it gives a fuller picture, so to speak. I really like the German States' coins. If you can get your hands on a German coin book your task will be a lot easier. I have one from 2003 that I use, but I only have five coins from four areas!

Hi - I do have all the Krauses - including the specialised German one and "Germany - Deutsche Munzen 800-2001 - By Weege" so I think I have that covered. While I have a good few German states coins already I always shied away from the thalers - mostly because of cost - but I think this project really deserves the outlay. I'm really looking forward to it.

That is SOME project you have assigned yourself with.
I guess that it may help to establish contact with German coin auctioneers and dealers.

and reverse. The coins in your project you can find them easily and without spending big money on ebay.But you have to compromise with low grades. If you want ms grades then it;s a difficult task  |

Hi,
Yes the tall guy second from right is Ludwig III (Louis for the anglised version) . I have them all identified on my webpage - I had some help from a couple of German friends for that. That's a nice coin you have too - the portrait is quite a good representation (there's a better photo on my page) while some are nothing like their real life picture.
I think I should be able to get some of the more common ones for about £60 or so while the less common ones will be about £100 - that's in reasonably good condition - but not mint. I assume when you say MS you mean the slabbing companies? - I won't be bothering with those as I don't really like slabbed coins. It's possibly beneficial for absolutely mint state coins but for anything less than that it's just a company making money by turning coins into commodities. I mostly collect ancients anyway where slabbing is pretty meaningless.

MS is a grade for uncirculated and not a slab.Slabs help when you buy coins sight unseen.But of course is meaningless for coin in low grades as the one I post here.Coins are commodities because we pay money to acquire them.We don't get them for free.
This coin is not in my possession any more.I sell it for 50 euro before six months.Anyway your project is marvelous and I will keep an eye on your page.

Thanks - yes I'm looking forward to hunting them down - but it will take a few years - or more - depends on the wallet :).
The photograph must have been one of the first ever of a gathering of rulers (photography was only really up and running for a decade or so).
I hope you like my webpage - I'll fill it in as I get them.

Interesting project, keep us posted as you progress in acquiring more coins. German Thalers have always been one of my favorite coin types. Sadly I sold all of mine to help cover the cost of my resent move.
