I want some advice on what to look out for when roll shopping for uncirculated or unsearched Lincoln pennies. I have come home with some that seem unopened and after going through them, feeling as though they truly were never opened. However, some other rolls I'm not so sure.

How do you know when you have a true unopened roll of copper cents? I don't want to get suckered into buying rolls of cents that have passed under someone's stereo microscope.

I'm sure there is plenty of info out there on this, if someone could help point me in the right direction it would be great!

There really is no way to tell unless you get them
directly from the mint. You can get newer cents from your local bank
by the box that are unopened. But even shotgun rolls from the bank are
just rerolled circulated cents. Banks collect rolls, loose cents and cents from their coin counting machines and they get dumped into bags
and are sent back to the Fed. or a contractor who then counts and re rolls them. Then they are sent back to the banks. Just one big circle.
Years back people were selling unopened rolls of wheats etc. Maybe some where legit but most were just rerolled. You can buy a machine and paper and make those shotgun type rolls yourself. If you get lucky you may find original bank unopened rolls of older cents at estate sales, flea markets, antique shops etc. After you find a few you can get an idea of what is legit and what is not. Hope this helps some. Maybe I left out a few other things but others may chime in with their thoughts.

The only unsearched rolls I've ever come across were the few dozen I had found in my grandfathers house. From the 70's to the early 90's most the lincoln cents he received in change he simply rolled up and put in a box under his bed. Needless to say I found quite a few wheat cents mixed in there.

i picked up a couple of rolls of 1960 LMC the rolls were complete but..... if I had looked closer you could see where someone had unrolled the crimp on one end and had already looked for the small date
