Here is an auction - take a look.

http://cgi.ebay.com/Lot-8-coins-8R-...140506537513

Here is a smaller version of the picture showing all 8 coins.

Would you bid?

The coins are all the same date and same condition - that is one warning. They could be from one source - but have you ever seen it before?

Second warning, all of the coins have a distinctive discoloration - could be similar storage conditions or it could be they were all aged in the same tank last week?

Third if you notice all 8 are from the same dies (weak O's) - none have chops or distinctive marks all show a lack of circulation.

Finally the seller has a low number and even though he is in the "US" I think he is on a Green Card from China. Check his other auctions and pay attention to his usage of the English language.

Chinese sellers setting up shop on US addresses should hire American proof readers.

If you thought for more than a few seconds about this auction or if you reached for your calculator to see what spot is on the lot - please send $50 to Swamper Bob - I have a toll bridge for sale in New York City.

Thanks to your posts here, I have learned to be very skeptical towards Mexican 8R coins. That said, it will be a long time before I consider myself qualified to collect these. Compared to my older silver coins, the toning above just look wrong--like somebody smeared them with shoe polish to appear old.

I wouldn't touch them. They all look the same. What are the chances for 1890 coins. The details look ... mushy. Run away!

But so far someone is going to pay $25 plus $15 for shipping.

Then look out they will be sold ONE AT A TIME.
Rest in Peace

"Lot of 8 beautiful coins sold as photos. What you see is what get."

Okay, I get it. He's selling photos of 8 coins for $25.00. Sounds fair to me ...

Just got a reply from the seller. I asked him about weight, the edge design and if they were magnetic.

Here is the reply.

Thank you very much for your questions. Oh, I have checked for the edges and they all are like modern US quarters ||||||||.

I have already found another example - only this time the auction is for ONE coin. The coin has the same weak O's but is far better as far as the mottled toning. It is offered as a "silver coin" by a seller from Milwaukee, WI.

He does say the coin weighs 20 grams - but is that enough?

Here are the pictures for when the auction ends.

Hello swamperbob!

I also saw this lot on ebay and although I did think it was a little suspicious I thought maybe they were all from a hoard or something like that hence the same date but now that you pointed out the obvious discrepancies I am glad I passed up this listing. I also noticed that they all have a weak "UBLI" in the REPUBLICA section.

It seems that the chinese forgeries are getting better now because they are not as obvious as the good ol 1882 Zs that we always see.

On a side note swamperbob, if you get a chance I posted a question for you on this thread regarding a recent acquisition I made. https://goccf.com/t/79846 If you have a minute I would appreciate if you take a look at it.
