Hello all. Here's another one of my lists I thought I would post and seek advice. I'm near completion of my toonies and thought I would list what I have and ask if there's any I should seek out.
First off, is it "toonie" or "twonie"..?

I've made comments next to a few. I know I'm missing the 1996-2006 with the date at the bottom which I'll get eventually.
Is there a standard design 2000 (not the Knowledge version) without the W mintmark?
Is there a 2003 Uncrowned (new effigy) without the "W" mint mark? I have the Uncrowned W coin.
Are there W mintmarks for more than the 1998, 2000, 2003 coins?

2000 (polar bear) does exist. I have one in my mint set.
2003 Uncrowned does exist. It is pretty common.

No, I don't think so. As for the 2003 Uncrowned {twonie/toonie  } they are perhaps the scarcest circulating issue, along with maybe the 1998. I sent off your Newfoundland cent today, by the way, and I wish I had read this before because I think I may have an extra 2003 uncrowned. I'll e-mail about this if I can dig it up. |

I am new to this forum as of today. I have been collecting canada coins for over 40 years. I also sell cois. I consider myself well versed in this topic. First, the 2 dollar coin is nicknamed "toonie". You listed 25 different toonies from 1996 to 2010. We have to reduce your list to 24 because there were only 2 varieties in 2000. My preference is collecting all the coins issued for circulation. In fact, there were 20 different coins issued by the Royal Canadian Mint for circulation from 1996 to 2010 (inclusive). There are actually 26 varieties if you include the ones that were issued in mint sets (not for general circulation). There are 2 varieties of the Nunavut (1) Line between the two metals and (2) No line between the two metals. Only 2 varieties in 2000 .. Knowledge for circulation .... Polar bear in uncirculated sets. So this cuts you list from 25 to 24 (so you listed 3 varieties for 2000). The first that you missed was a second 1999 Nunavut variety. The second that you missed was the 2010 Canadian lynx reverse found in specimen sets. If you need more details on any of the 26 varieties of toonies from 1996 to 2010 (inclusive), just contact me. Remember that only 20 of the 26 varieties were issued for circulation. The other six varieties were issued in various uncirculated sets. Actually the german planchett ERRORs that list there aren't really part of the series, but getting a german planchett toonie would count. ICCS doesn't grade them below MS 62, because there is very, VERY little difference between a canadian planchett and german planchett below that grade. It's all about lustre, it's different on the german one :)
Also, there is no "correct" spelling of toonie twonie, etc. It's a made up word, not registered anywhere, and lingusitic conventions will differ based on your region and association.

2000: "Path of Knowledge" for circulation and yes, the "standard" Polar Bear Toonie was issued in sets. Some sets had the one with the "W" and some sets the Toonie without it! So, yes, there are three different Toonies for 2000. 1999: And it's debatable if you need to have the rare Nunavut "metal line" variety in your collection. Wasn't it an error by the mint? Thanks again for your replies. It appears there are three (for sure) I'll still need to get. coinsoldier, now that you mention the Lynx Toonie I remember it exists, but they're not cheap. I was on the hunt for coins in circulation. The three W mint toonies luckily came my way through an inexpensive ebay sale. redlock, thanks for the link. That's very informative. I'll pass on the Nunavut mule as that one is dear. I don't really collect errors as the existence of them can be confusing and never ending. I'll have to start another thread with the nickel dollars and Loonies to see what I'm missing, but I think I have almost everything there. Ken |

Regarding the correct spelling: The Royal Canadian Mint received trademark for the word "Toonie" in the year 2005. Trademark #0916678. There is no trademark for "Twonie". |

So prior to 2005, toonie and twoonie and twonie were all okay. But now that there is a trademark on one of the names, apparently all the rest are void :P
What the mint did was protect one of the names used for it's $2 coin, so it could market it under that name. Sure, that makes toonie "official", but since multiple spellings did exist prior to the trademark, those spellings did not become void.

Hey there matchbox, since you are a "toonie" man, check out this one... ebay.com 2006 ngc graded pf69 $500 obo....always been a bit out of reach for me..not sure how to add a link, sorry I like how they reversed the color scheme for the 10th anniversary gold coin. Edited by SILDOL

I noticed the Charlton Catalogue had been keeping giving price of the 2006 uncrowned double date polar bear reverse at MS-64 to MS-66 "C" (which means Circulation finished) for years (63th - 65th edition for me at least). But, Does this toonie - the 2006 uncrowned double date polar bear reverse ISSUED FOR CIRCULATION really exist?
I've been looking for it for years. The only I can find was the Proof Like one from the 2006 official PL set.
