Most of the 20th-century coins that I could identify from the photos are obsolete (many replaced by the euro or more current coinage); these probably won't have much more value the coins I buy at $6.50 per pound from my dealer and then sort through for varieties and type coins. The silver coins will have a higher value, and some in very fine condition, and those from the 19th century and older may be rarer and worth a bit more. But I sense that you're not really interested in value.

What to do next with them? Unless you just want to get rid of them, this is a perfect opportunity for you to enter a fascinating learning experience about coins. You could start by picking up a copy of a world coins value guide at your nearby Barnes & Noble or Borders (or Amazon, if mail order is a better option) and start learning about the coins you have. Chances are you'll be able to retrace your uncle's steps just from the coins he picked up. Good luck!

Many thanks for all the replies, especially for the identification of the coins that I couldn't place. Much appreciated.

The list of countries is now 33, and I'll post the full breakdown soon.

In the meantime, here are the last 3 unidentified coins, although the smallest one has been identified as Maltese.

I have no intention of becoming a coin collector. This has been fascinating, but I am not a collecting person. I would really like to get this collection, as a whole, to someone who has an interest.........otherwise for me they would be stuck in the back of a drawer and only discovered when my own kids come to clear out my house when I'm dead!

If someone could please let me know what these last few are, I can finish my list. The really worn one on the left is so difficult to get a good image of. The lower two silver coins are representative of a whole lot of coins I assume to be Egyptian. Could someone put me right, please?

Many thanks, folks.

Mike

The small coin is a copper Grano from Malta. The World Coins reference is either KM# 298.4 or 298.5, depending on whether the name on the obverse is spelled Emmanuel or Emmanvel.

Mike,

I have a great idea. Many people on this forum are interested in your coins. Several people have, in the past, made contests on the forum for this kind of thing.

For instance, you could pick an end date & time, say 1 week from now. Have people guess your birthdate (or something else). At end time, the person closest to your birthdate wins.

Or, like someone else suggested, donate it to a Boy Scout or Girl Scout Troop for scouts to earn badges.

What?! No collecting "spark" after this exhaustive list? Thanks for taking the time to track down ID's and list them, anyway. Some of the older coins have a bit more value, of course (sorry, I don't have an estimate), but the rest of them would present a fascinating challenge for a kid in your life who might be a budding coin collector. yechi7's idea has merit (pardon the terrible pun), and if you can't find a local destination, perhaps the "darksiders" here could come up with a contest so that these coins - if you really don't wish to retain them - could be the spark for a beginning coin collector.

Here's your starter:

Denmark
2 Kroner 1952, $1 - 20
1 Kroner 1919, not recorded for that date
1 Kroner 1952-' 63 x6 1952 $3-24 a 59 or 60 good money
25 Ore 1949-1961 (x6), little value except 59 and a variety of 1960
10 Ore (x7), '22, 33,45,47& 59 worth looking for
5 Ore 1943-'59 (x3) '50, 51 & 55 ======"========

Eire
2S-6d 1928, $5 - 50
2S 1962, $0.50 - 10
1S 1931 $4.5 - 275
1/2d '35, $2.00 -- 285,
3d 1904

In places where there's a value given as $5 - 20 for example, that indicates the lower and upper end values dependant on condition as given in Standard Catalog of World Coins

Thanks Alganbagerap............but hey, what's this with the dollars? I am on the Essex/ Suffolk border, and we still use good old pounds Sterling down here!

One of the 5 Ores is 1955......and the 1919 Kroner was a typo (oops!).

LOL. Darksider is an American collector that likes foreign coins. A LOT of us yanks don't realize there is a whole world of numismatics other than US issues. I myself fancy French and FAO coins as well as bing a Lincoln addict. That said most everybody here is dedicated to the hobby and are probably thebest sources of info found anywhere...

50 prutah, either 1949 or 1954, if you show us the other side (with the denomination) I could tell you the date for sure.

Sudan
2 unknown, untranslated, undated

Looks like 5 and 10 ghirsh, a little close-up and I could date them for you.

Quote:
Iran
11 assorted coins untranslated from the Arabic, age unknown

You mean Persian , don't you? I see a bunch of 2 and 5 rials. Again, with close-ups could be dated.

Ireland

Unknown 1901

Are you sure about the date? It's very tricky to date coins of Ottoman times. Could it be 1951? (Arabic 5 looks like 0)

You should put the Straits Settlements in the "Far East and India" category - it was in what is modern Malaysia.

4th (row) - old Thailand coins

I'm afraid I was wrong. They look very familiar but I cannot place them. Again, close-up image and both sides would help immensely!
