Today at the shop they took in a Gold Medal. I was asked to determine if it should be melted.
The medal is proof (PF63) with some improper handling but nothing really bad. No photos available.
It is a commemorative medal in the name of Johann Josef Ismeng 1806-1869. The legends are German. On the obverse is a bust of Father Ismeng surrounded by the legend:
DEM ERSTEN SKIFAHRER DER SCHWEIZ GEWIDMET
Which I translate as
"Dedicated to the Father of Skiing in Switzerland"
On the reverse is a Church with a very tall steeple and the legend
SAAS FEE DIE PERLE DE ALPEN
Which means "Saas Fee the pearl of the Alps"
The medal is 900 fine gold and weighs 26.4 grams. The edge is plain but has a number "397" punched into the edge.
I presume this is # 397 of a limited edition.
The question is should this thing be rescued from the melting pot?
