I picked up this coin last week.. Thoughts? Also - I noticed the 1 looks like it's boxed in (and all of the numbers appear to be weakly struck).. and there's a pretty big die crack along the bottom of the reverse. Is this a special variety? Or common for this date/series?   |

Not experienced at grading these but I'm going to take a stab at it... AU-55? The date is weird as is the top of the reverse on STATES. I'm guessing strike weakness as the rest of the coin is nowhere near enough the level of wear needed to weaken that area.

I have two of these coins and can honestly say that mine do not look like yours. I will take a closer look at them soon and let you know if there is any similarities. Good looking coin. Definately an AU grade.

Yeah - I have taken a look at a lot of these on heritage, and didn't see any others with the weakness on the date/States. But, I have also read that there are lots of die cracks and errors on this series, so I thought I'd see if anyone knows more about it than I do.

nohope is the resident expert I always go top when I have a question about 2 cent coins. I am sure he would be able to tell you what variety this is and how rare it is and even what grade it is.

I think it has some weak strike areas, but its at least AU-58, if not unc.

Its a Re punched date variety. I'm offshore at the moment but should be back home in a day or two. I'll look up the actual variety then

I was actually thinking it was either a slider or MS myself. There still seems to be luster on the tips of the arrows as well as on the WE. For everyone saying AU.. was that based on weak strike/wear? Or do you see signs of wear in other places that I'm missing. I'm happy with the purchase as either AU or MS.. But I'm hoping for MS :)
Are repunched dates always a positive attribute to a coin? Or can they sometimes be negative?

it is a KF-L10-RPD (Flynn), BR2375 (Breen), FL64LG-4olr (Leone) It falls under the scarce category which means its not common but not so rare that it commands a huge premium. As for the grade. If the colour is representative of the coin and your white balance is set correctly. (I don't think it is) then I am with Prethen. I think a TPG would say questionable colour. It has too many distracting hits to get a high MS grade. I would give it an MS62 questionable colour. |

I said AU based on what I thought was rub on some of the leaves on the obverse. But after a second glance, it could just be the toning throwing me off. In either case it's a gorgeous coin.

These pictures are closer to what I think the coin actually looks like. Would these be considered Brown or Red-Brown?   What are some of the keys to look for on questionable color? Are the high points or recesses usually a certain color? Or is it more of a feel from looking at thousands and thousands of coins? :) I'm guessing I probably did okay at $55 even if it has questionable color? Edited by nwc coin

$55 is a great price even with issues.. If those colours are correct then I am going to say definitely cleaned/dipped and re-toned the dark oily colouring is a good indicator of an old cleaning. Generally 2 Cents tone a nice chocolate brown there would need to be a lot more red to make even Red/Brn This is typical colouring for an original 2 Cent.  A whizzed one looks like this  |
