I've never taken a loupe to my proof sets, so here we go.

I've found what appears to be Machine Doubling on a 1999 proof cent. However, the doubling doesn't have plating on it. The zinc pops right out of the coin. It is on the west side on the tops of the letters and along the edge of the memorial. I just want to make sure what I am seeing is normal.

If you are seeing exposed zinc, that sounds more like split plating than Machine Doubling although both could occur on the same coin.

Okay, I can post pics. I have also noticed that my Georgia quarter has doubling on the letters under Washington, liberty, the MM and INWT. Also, in my 2000 set my Sac dollar has heady doubling on the date and MM. The mint mark looks so bad I instantly thought it looked like RPM but of course it cant be. I'll see if I cant get pics of all three.

Here are pictures of what I am describing. Oddly enough, my 2000 proof cent has the exact same thing. The difference is that the 1999 seems to have a frosted appearance where the zinc shows, and the 2000 is smooth as a whistle. The pics are kind of rough.

Here is the 1999:

I've seen that on more than one proof cent...what a shame.

Yes, that would be split plating- the cause of so many business strike Zincolns rotting away. Since yours are still in the Proof Sets, there should not be much worry about zinc rot as long as you keep the sets away from humidity.

Seems like the mint could afford the extra 2 cents in copper prices to strike us up some copper proofs. They do silver proof, why not copper? In my opinion these pennies are unacceptable. I really dislike the zinc.
