My bank said I need to order $1000 of half dollars and that they come loose. I was a little confused why they'd be loose. So, I email the Federal Reserve asking about this and they said banks must order in $1000 increments and their courier service wrap them. Does this mean my bank does not use this courier service and would it be a good idea to go through with this still? Or do I run the risk of it being picked through by my bank or others? Sorry if this is dumb. I'm just new to this and want to make sure I'm informed enough.
Thanks!

My banks order $500 boxes whenever I need them. They do come rolled. If they are loose, I think a smart teller would look through them. I had one bank that I used to order halves by the box. When I went to pick them up the rolls were cut on the side to expose the edge of the coins and then a piece of tape was added to hold them closed. As you can guess I don't order rolls from that bank anymore.

I have been told by several banks that they have to order in $1000 increments. The coins I get are wrapped and in a sealed box. I know some people on this sight have received $1000 in a bag, probably sealed also. Get the 1k worth in a bag it will be easier than unwrapping the coins. I find the hard part is dumpiong the coins when I am done.

The banks around here order $1000 at a time, either in one bag or two boxes. Some banks want you to take both boxes because either no demand for them or no space to store them in the vault. Some banks will allow you to take just one.

I went to the federal reserve of Philadelphia website and there's a contact form there.
Thanks for the replies guys. I will ask my bank if this bag will be sealed in some way. I also could ask the girlfriend to ask her bank too.

My bank will allow me to order boxes. I just had to ask. I have asked a few banks. Some say yes, some say no.

I think this is just " your" banks rules. My bank has always let me order any number of boxes I wanted. Whether it was just one box of halves.....one box of Cents/Nickels....whatever. Go ask at other banks. Then when you find a bank that will let you order just one box (you will have to tell them that you'll open up an account with them for a few hundred bucks), you can then just use that bank as your "Silver huntin' Bank"......

Are you guys finding enough silver and key dates to justify your effort? Just asking.

Carmykle,
The last 2 weeks, I have gone through $10k worth of halves. Out of that, I have found 60+ 40%'s and 10 or so odd balls. (90%ers, 1982 George Washington etc.)
I'm not sure what "worth it" is for you, but it is enough to keep me going. I have another 10 boxes ready to pick up today... I'll let you know tonight or tomorrow what the finds were.

Soemtimes I go weeks without any silver. It is alot of work for sometimes no reward, but I like to treasure hunt. Worth it depends on you. I search dimes too and always find some silver there.

Out of curiosity how much does your banks charge you for the fees and stuff?

You should not have to pay any sort of fees for ordering boxes of coin. Some banks attempt to charge their customers for this service. If I were you I would search around for another bank that does not charge per box/bag of coin. If I was to pay fees for ordering boxes I would get charged $20 a week. No thanks to that.

some banks do $1000 plastic bags and others $500 boxes. I have had much better luck with bags than boxes because it seems more likely for bags to come off coin counters that people dump collections into than rolls from elsewhere.
