Once a coin is graded and in a holder can the grade change due to spotting or toning?

it won't ever spot or tone in a holder, but the grade can go up(or down) if you try to get re-slabbed

It can change from one TPG to another or sometimes from one grader to another.Remember, it's somebodys opinion. And Adam-E.. It can tone in the slab...especially from sunlight.

Coins can and do spot, tone, and otherwise change while in any holder. This can change the grade and often causes downgrades, particularly on copper.

My concern is spotting on a NGC ms 70 Roosevelt 5 dollar gold.

NGC will cover it if the spotting is bad. Modern gold commemoratives should not be a big concern. Can you post pictures?

you can send a coin that has spotted like you are talking about for review and if NGC determines it should be downgraded it would be covered under their grade guarantee. Now I don't think they guarantee copper coins like Lincoln Cents as the color designation but not 100% sure about that

I saw on another thread that NGC would pay you the difference if the coin was downgraded by them at a later date. Could this be true?

That's exactly what they do. How much of a price difference there is between a 69 and a 70 is debatable though. My guess is you'd be looking at $100 to $200 for a downgrade to 69.

If that is the case maybe it is better to keep the coins than risk being downgraded and at their mercy. I started checking some other coins from the same safety deposit box and also notice others with light spotting. I have had the box for over 20 years adding as I purchase coins. Any ideas on how to properly keep coins from the environment, long term?

I keep a silica gel packet in my SDB and recharge it in my oven evey 2 months or so. That keeps humidity low and hopefully controls spotting.
