This one is causing me some confusion. The ANA Grading Standards stipulates that in order for it to be VG, some letters in Liberty are clear; however, it also indicates that the rim is complete for this grade. This one has some letters visible, but the rim is gone from around 4 o'clock to about 7 o'clock on the obverse, and from around 8 o'clock to about 11 o'clock on the reverse. I've only 4 of these quarters, and the other 3 won't grade above Good, so I really don't have anything in hand to compare it to. Any opinions on this one?

Based on the rim wear, it looks like the planchet is uneven (tapered on one side). Uneven planchets will cause weak detail in that part of the coin and you are seeing it as rims gone in some places but some letters of Liberty still visible. I would call this one G-6.

Okay - thanks guys.
Of course, biokemist6, your response about uneven planchets brings another question to mind. Are uneven planchets common among pre-Civil War coins? I've several, of different denominations, that show the same type of thing - decent detail, but part of the rim is gone - much similar to what I've shown here. And, due to the partial rim, I've graded them lower than the detail would warrant were it not for this problem with the rim.

Yes, uneven planchets occurred with some frequency in pre-Civil War coinage and even into the later 1800s. Quality control wasnt always top priority back then so you will frequently see things like planchet and die flaws.

As far as grading goes, your quarter would probably make VG-8 if the planchet was normal. Since it is uneven, I went down to G-6, a slight downgrade. Some would go down to G-4 on it.

I will generally give a smaller downgrade to a planchet flaw (uneven, lamination, etc) than I would to a ding or a scratch since that is considered actual damage whereas a planchet flaw is just an inherent defect.

Okay - yeah, I had it graded as G-4 on my spreadsheet - I'll add the info on the uneven planchet in the comments column. Thanks.
