I just found a Lincoln Cent from 1974 that appears gold or bright brass with very little tarnish I don't see any degredation of the minting. It also 'rings' a higher tone than another standard '74 penny when I drop it on the desktop. There are some very light scratches on the surface that do not reveal copper. Think this is someone's electroplating experiment or is this a find?

Possibly a Solid Gold Cent made to fool people into thinking it was really all Copper. Pure Copper is expensive. True testing would be to take a butane torch to it and if it melts easily, not a true, pure Copper coin at all.
Or more than likely someone just polished a normal every day coin. Now imagine if that was indeed a fantastically rare coin and you are bouncind it around for a test. Nothing like a million dollar coin with dents all over it.

Hello again, sorry about taking so long to get back to you, cash flow issues leading to lack of internet and then swine flu. That really sucked. Almost as much as losing my internet...

I just went hunting around on the internet and saw something spooky about coins like this.

Apparently, and I don't know if it's true, there were some 'uncirculated' aluminum and bronze pennies in 1974 that were lost and found their way into circulation. Supposedly it's illegal to own them. Suck. Now what the heck do I with it? Don't really want to get rid of it, I got it in my change so it's been around. You don't think there is some kind of reward for turning one in do you? Like a big keep-my-internet-on kind of thing, eh? I'd sell it on ebay but that'd probably get me in trouble if it's true...

Odds are I'm over-reacting. But I'm torn between keeping it and solving several bill issues (like 5 months back rent) if it's actually valuable.

Here's one of the articles, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/1974_aluminium_cent
kind of sums up other stuff I read also...

Geobaldi,

I'd start by using the search function on this very forum, to see earlier 'examples' of 1974 aluminum cents. Just click here:

As you can tell from the search, 1974 aluminum pennies are discussed with some amazing regularity.
