I'm referring to the mark/die strike/something else? on the temple, neck and throat. I haven't seen something like this on Buffaloes.

I'm not entirely sure, but $53.01 is a pretty good deal for this coin, I might just make a bid myself.

The "pimple" areas are very common on high end Buffalo's... In the lower areas, if you polish the die too much, then the deeper areas would show every little flaw... so the mint polishes the inside of the dies more than the flat surfaces that would end up being in the deeper areas. I hope that made sense.
Check out high end Buffalo's and you'll see it many times.

I like the coin - it has a good (not great) strike, not a lot of bag marks and the luster seems to be it's highest mark. I'm not sold on the reverse though. The fur details bother me a bit (for a coin of this grade). I personally think it's a nice coin, but I don't think I'll win it ;(.

CEO - It makes sense. What I'm gaining from this is that they're from over polishing?

What I'd like to know is if they're frowned upon? I'm not a huge fan of it, but I do like the price more than anything. This of course will spike at the end of the auction like they always do.

I don't see what you're problem is with the fur details, they all seem fine barring what's obscured by the glare.

They're not horrible, just could be a little bit better on the front left leg. I'd also like to see a little stronger line between the fur and the rib cage. Still a wonderful nickel. I've bid on it, but I doubt I'm going to win it.

I should also say that from what I can find - this is one of the cheapest nickels in the set. I plan on building a pretty nice set of buffaloes over time. For that reason I've been trying to be extra picky on this one. I have no problem spending an extra $30 to get the coin with the details I want here.

I haven't been looking at buffaloes all that long, so this was a new thing for me (seeing the pimples). I have admittedly been looking at MS65/MS64 nickels so far. I bumped up to the 66/67 range just to see what I'd be looking at. To me there seems to be a noticeable difference from most of the big TPG's in regards to a 65 and 66 over a 64. Arguably there should be, but I'm finding it to be more luster than strike details - which I don't agree with. But then again, who am I? A young guy who's been collecting for maybe 6 months now :). I'll get there and be able to hang one of these days. So - CEO thanks for informing me on something I did not know!

CEO has it exactly backwards. This obvverse was showing extreme die wear (The pimply areas) and those areas were much more extensive. But the die was polished removing the rough pimply areas from the field. (You can see some traces of them in the field behind the neck and above the shoulder.) The polishing did not get down into the deeper areas of the die so the die wear still shows in the low areas of the devices. (Low areas of the devices are the higher areas of the die and the wear will show there before it does in the deepest areas of the die.)

Ah... that makes sense to me now. I don't know why it clicked when you said it. So the pimples are from overuse of a die. But what did they use to polish a die?
