JWR just put up today a new article on hoarding nickels. Just plug his name into any search engine to get to the website...

Anyway, a couple of questions to the nickel roll searchers: What are the % of finding a silver War Nickel in circulation? How about 38's and 39's? Finally, just how tough is it to gather 2009's?

I have all ready made up my mind to start going through nickel rolls, in addition to the cents I all ready check.

Just trying to get a line on how often I can find something of value in addition to the metal content of the ordinary nickel!

Nickelman if you're out there, would appreciate your feedback on these questions especially!

Silver War Nickels, for me, are about 0.05% of what I search. 38's and 39's are a slight bit more common. 2009's are rarer than War Nickels for me, mostly due to hoarding, I think.

Interesting article.

I have to disagree with him saying cents are not worth the time, both nickels and cents are worth hoarding for the same reasons. Nickels are just easier (keep them all) versus the cents (pre-1982).

As to you other question, start with this thread if you have not looked through it already...

It is quite big. It may be easier for others to summarize the information for you here, but I wanted you to be aware of it if you had to time or desire to sift through it.

Well .... I can certainly add some find rate statistics to the discussion ... and will ... but first ...

Calibrate yourself on the expectations for roll-searching USA nickels or cents ... you will not get rich ... the joy for me personally is the thrill of the treasure hunt with an occasional 'nice find'.

My simple goal with nickels is to find the entire 1938-2011 circulation strike set from bank rolls ... and this treasure hunt has been great fun at a cost of 5 cents per coin.

The variety of possible finds in current USA bank roll nickles is IMHO special for a roll searcher ... you can aspire (with some patience) to complete the set, you can Buffalo and V-nickels, you can find foreign coins .... all at 5 cents each.

Sooooo ... to the find rate statistics ...

So far I have searched 237,600 raw nickels .... with the following find rates:

Overall find rate (1959 and earlier coins) is 1.313% .... I have managed to hoard away 3,120 of these.

I have found 83 War Silver ... average is 1 War Silver find every 2863 coins searched.

I have found 136 '38 - '39 .... average is 1 every 1747 coins searched.

I have found 34 Buffalo nickels ... average is 1 every 6988 coins searched.

For the 2009 .... they are right now proving to be tough to find in rolls ... I have 9 so far ... but I remain of the opinion that the Mint did not melt the 63,000,000 coins struck and someday soon they will be everyday coins ... my view ... wait and they will come to you.

I have found great fun and joy during the hunt and commend to all the humble nickel.

David
