So I've been collecting from circulation, and roll searching pennies, Nickels, dimes and quarters, and I've been thinking about getting into halves...

What do you think? Do it and get some halves from the bank? I figure I can find halves in better shape than most other coins due to lower circulation.

Any suggestions/ tips/ comments?

If I were you I'd spend some time reading the thread on roll searching halves on this site. There is probably some good info on there for you. I can tell you I just searched two boxes and found on fourty percenter and a seventy three proof. Some guys are having great luck, and some not so much.

If you can find halves at the bank then get them!
For some of us, our banks get attitude when we ask for halves. I began this hobby
With the hopemof buying boxes of halves from my bank but I have found out that
None of the banks in my area will let me order halves
I even tried bribing tellers and branch managers.

A lot of hunters have ruined it for the rest of us by returning or dumping coin where they bought it, ordering boxes and never showing up, dumping too often, etc. I say just jump in and do it, never know till you try. One poster gave good advice about reading previous threads on roll hunting.

if you are tring to get a full set of JFKs I would recomend buying a 1970 and 1987 mint set the rest you should be able to get roll searching except 2001 and later NIFCs

I had a bank that used to let me order halves, then one day a guy ordered 1000$ worth and never got them and the bank had to pay to send them back and made it a policy not to order anymore

I went through a few bags got one 40% silver.
I find penny search much more interesting and no hassle for getting pennies

Dumping or returning coins seems to be the hardest part of the roll search. I
like haves but they are so hard to get rid of. I do alot of nickels, dimes and pennies and they are sooo much easier to get rid of. Halves are easy to see so I like them, but if you want to do it make sure you can get rid of them. I don't return halves to the banks that give them to me.

Depends on what your goal is. If you just want a set of halves, buy them. If your looking for old coins or silver its almost easier to buy them also. Truthfully its a heck of a lot of work without a lot of return.

I buy them also, quit roll searching for them when I roved to rural america. I get the NIFC coins from mint sets and watch the actions for older coins. I've had a blast collecting them but I know that some day I'll have to re-holder them and that will be time consuming. I recently found that I have 2-6 of everything JFK except for some of the VAMs. Maybe I should put the whole collection together in air-tights and see what I really have. I hate it when you have so much of something that you don't really know what you have; almost like a hoard right now.

I read a bit of the roll searching threads and from what you guys have posted... and seems like it might just not be worth the time or effort to go roll searching for halves... My goal was to have a set of them, and learn about half dollars as I went along. There's just something not as satisfying as when you find that last "hole" that you need to fill in a roll.

I think I might just casually search around the area banks and take what I can get, and maybe not search so aggressively.

On a lighter note, I bought my first box of pennies today! The teller gave me a little trouble even though I had an account (she didnt believe me)... I can see where there might be trouble buying a less common denomination.

If you still have a bank that will give you or order you halves, get as many as you can now. Many banks everywhere are stopping ordering them, carrying them and even accepting them in bulk. Almost all banks by me will take them in, send out for counting, charge you for that. As a joke I asked at one bank what would you do if I brought in 2 halves. I was told rules are rules and they would be sent out for counting and I wouold have to pay for that.

Newbismatic,
Don't be discouraged. If you want to roll search halves, do it. You'll only know if it is worth it to continue if you try. And I agree with the pennies being lesser of a hassle. Get nickels, too. They are fun to go through. And dime rolls have historically provided more silver coin for me. I dumped $999.00 in halves at a Bank Of America today. Of course they were all curious as to where/how/why I got all of these halves so I just told them that I look through them all because I deal in coins. Then one teller starts asking me how much her silver dollar is worth that she has sitting at home. If you ever have any problems with tellers just roll with it and find a bank where the tellers are friendly and the banks' policies on coin rolls works in your favor.

i agree with mitch. good advice.

the best thing you can do is to build a reporte with a particular group of tellers. if you have a lot of coin knowledge and they notice you're a weirdo rollhunter perhaps you can show them something or whatever. at one of my banks they didn't know what silver quarters looked like and so I brought some in, and then it was gravy.

whatever you do, don't tell them that you make a killing on this hobby.

My advice - get 2 grand together and order 4 boxes. You will maximize your chances of finding something worthwhile - whether its silver or just clean looking coins to build out a set.

True True. Thanks for all of the info. I have the best relationship with the tellers at the bank I dump all of my coins at! Oy... Should I switch and dump at another bank and get coin through them instead? Other than that, there are a few tellers at the other banks that dread seeing me come in. I don't even get that many coins... Like I said I got my first box of pennies yesterday. Before that it would be $10 here and $10 there, to get some of the customer rolls that are brought in (seems like I have better finds in the customer rolls than the bank boxes so far.)

Halves just seem to be difficult for everyone involved... Hence the topic post in the first place. Getting them doesn't seem to be the hardest part, but getting rid of them seems even harder. I could just use halves for all of my small purchases throughout the month, I bet if I just bought my coffee, I might be able to get rid of a decent amount. Is that what you guys do, or do you pay the fee to dump them? (if there is a fee)
