I hauled in $200 of nickels to dump there today and that's what the teller told me when it wouldn't turn on. I'm scared of what these "adjustments" might be. This is the only bank with a coin counter in my area that I know of, so I'm hoping for the best. If they're adding a fee on it for members then I'm through with roll hunting. I'm going back tommorow. gonna keep you posted.

It's mechanical and like anything else mechanical will need maintenance from time to time. The "adjustments" may not have been the right term unless they are finding that the counting has been off and they need to correct that. If they were planning to add a fee for turning in coins, it wouldnt make much sense to take the machine down IMO. Hopefully you;re worried about nothing. :)

I deposit a lot of bulk coin. I go to my bank ask for a coin deposit bag, put $200 of nickels in it, and bring it back to them sealed and properly filled out. Simple. If your bank wont order the bags for you (free) then go to the bank next door and explain the situation to them and they will order them for you if you open an account with them. Then go back to your original bank and explain that since they wont service you properly you are forced to change to the bank next door and see what happens.

It is okay to discuss roll hunting, but I (and many others) did not like seeing the one-sided bashing of banks for doing what is their right as a business. It should go without saying that if you do not like the way they do things you can go somewhere else. Again, banks are there to make money, no to serve collectors.

Of course banks make most of their $$$ by borrowing it from the government at 0.25% and loaning it out to people at 5%+, so their coin counting fees aren't their main revenue stream...

Exactly. Best case they break even with the fees, but most lose money on them (maintenance, the original subject of this thread, is not cheap) and it takes away from their profit. They offer it as a perk, but when the perk is abused, it goes away.

Ah, I think I am starting to understand what you mean. I was confused by why the roll/bag thing would be an issue on this forum. The confusion on my part comes from seeing the issue through different eyes. See when I deposit bulk coin it has nothing to do with collecting, it all is a by-product of the business I work for. There is no humanly way possible I could ever sort through it all. Best I can do is just pick out the coins I see along the way. So my comments are from that side of the discussion. I have to go to a bank and explain to them that I have special needs as a customer and if they agree to support me I open an account. I've been doing this for many years and always try to keep on very good terms with them even though I can see the tellers exhale deeply when I come through the door with my cart. But the bottom line is we put a lot of money in their bank so I feel it is a good relationship for us both. Hope that helps clear things up about what I said.

Quote: Hope that helps clear things up about what I said. Yes it does and I appreciate your effort. Actually, a large majority of the posts were okay. The cause for complaint came when the posts went from legitimate concerns to people whining about no longer getting a free ride. It is okay to ask questions, like... Which banks still have (free) coin counters? How do you order your boxes? How should I reward good tellers for helping me out? It is not okay to continually whine about banks that have no (free) coin counters, no longer order boxes, or have tellers that simply tell you they cannot do something anymore. We get it, you are upset because your free ride has ended. Get over it. Sorry, I did not meant to rant again!
