Hey there,

I'm very new to coins, and I seem to like pennies. I'm trying to find out how to acquire penny rolls to search. If I go to the bank, is there a specific type of roll/bag/box that I can request as opposed to just getting handed some random penny rolls? Thanks for any info

If you ask for smaller amounts, (say under $25), you will probably be given hand wrapped rolls. (rolls wrapped by people turning their cents into the bank). If you ask for larger amounts (over $25) you will probably be given a box of cents. They are in $25 boxes and come from the Fed.

If you want to order more than $25 - I would recommend ordering advance. The bank places their order for coins normally once a week. I order them $100 at a time, ordering one week in advance.

Good luck. Wear surgical gloves (pennies get very dirty). Or if you don't wear anything on the hands - remember not to pick your eyes, or nose while searching! Trust me on that one - got real sick with something going through my first $100 worth.

Check out the thread started by Bad Thad on the kinds of things people are finding in penny roll searching! Lots of good things out there!

Good luck

I usually call my bank and tell them that I am going to come by for a box of pennies, nickels, etc. Most banks that I have dealt with don't have a problem with that. I used to show up and try to get alot of coins and found out that if you call, they will get them from the vault and have them ready when you get there. They are usually more than happy to help. Good luck.

many times the bank has what they have - doesn't matter the quantity you ask for. Most banks order from a supplier that brings what they have, which is often coinstar deposits, etc. Mintage on new coins has gone down mostly because the coin aren't sitting around as much any more. banks and companies like coinstar have made it much easier for consumers to get rid of their coins - and they do.

The only thing I can provide to your initial concern is that often times some of the best finds can be in stuff your neighbors rolled up and took to the bank - there's nothing at all wrong with 'random' rolls of coins.

thanks for the info so far... my other question is..

What is the best way to sort pennies, and when I'm sorting what are some general things that I should be looking for?

Currently, I am sorting into 4 piles:

1) wheaties
2) anything to 1981 (copper)
3) leftover of the 80's
4) 1990-present

I am looking at each penny for:

1) rotating die
2) pre 1982 coppers
3) 1993-present I'm looking for Wide AM
4) wheaties
5) 1984 double ear Lincoln
6) double dies

When I don't find any of these, then I flip to the page that each dated penny is on in one of the following books and I inspect further:

I have "A Guidebook of Lincoln Cents", 2011 Red Book, and "Striking it Rich with Pocket Change".

Are there any other quick spots that I am potentially missing? I'm very new, and currently only searching change that I've had laying around the house, I'm going to try to get to a bank today and see if I can get a $25 box.

On a side note: I found a 1944 wheat, and I have a pocket scale, I'm trying to find out the weight in grams that a steel penny weighs so that I can see if my 1944 is steel or not. Does anyone know the weight? thanks

Being new to coins you may not have tried some of the other methods to find coins. For example ask all your relatives if they have any jars, boxes, cans of coin laying around. Also, same with neighbors and friends. Look around for yard/garage/estate sales too. Same with flea markets. My greatest finds have come from some of those places.
It really is amazing at what is sometimes available right next door.

1943 are steel. You also want to take out the S mint pennies.
