ok......modified the topic with pics attached.....would like grade opinions as well as any comments on whether or not you see anything on the coin(s) that might make it come back in a body bag.

Post your pics. I have experience with NGC and PCGS. If you suspect your coins have been cleaned or have been artificially toned, you will be 'body bagged'.

Wow, nice coins! I'd love to have some of those in my set, but I'm going for a circulated set(since there is no way I can afford the key dates in that grade).

Honestly, it is hard to get a read on the luster from those coins, which makes it hard to grade in the high AU-MS range. They all look at least high end AU, but I wouldnt consider sending them in unless I think they are at least MS-62 or so. None of them look obvious cleaned, but again, it's tough to tell without a read on the luster. Could you possibly get some more detailed pics with a direct light source?

Thanks fo the compliment.....sold a lot of other stuff to get the $$ for these awhile ago.

I could try with the pics.....i used the outside natural light which gives me the best pic without a ton of glare. I cannot seem to get a good pic inside without a big shiny spot from the flash. I guess I need to experiment more. Note that the last 2 pics show better as they are the only ones not in 2x2s. Any pointers on getting better pics?

Why would you not send coins lower than MS-62 in?
Rest in Peace

As far as photography goes, a direct light source in my opinion is better for capturing the luster and accentuating nicks, dings, or cleaning hairlines. Natural light seems better for color and detail. Other folks are much better photographers than I am, so someone can chime in with better advice.

As far as certification goes, they are all common dates, and you have to weigh in the cost of certification and if there is enough value added in slabs vs. keeping them raw. I just picked MS-62, because imho there just isn't enough value added to justify the $40 or so cost of getting them slabbed for common dates in lower grades. If they were keys or semi-keys, that's a whole different story. A 1916 or a 1923-s is worth getting slabbed in any identifiable grade.

good point....one thing I've learned is that when you are buying higher grade stuff that you are not putting in a folder or album the best thing is to buy it slabbed. It is my intent to keep most or all of these and I'd prefer to have them slabbed, so I am def weighing the cost. and it is sometimes difficult to sell higher end stuff if it isn't in a slab.

I agree about the luster: it's difficult to judge the luster quality from these photos and luster is critical. If the coins all look as "flat" in-hand as they do in the photos I'd say they have been over-dipped to the point that the luster was damaged. Try lighting the coins using a bright desk lamp and turn off the camera flash, then photograph with different light positions. You should be able to show the luster without causing a glare problem.

I'd say the 1923 and 1917 are the best candidates for grading and would be most likely to repay the grading cost if/when you want to sell.

MDH: It would also help greatly for photographing them if you took them out of the stapled 2x2 holders. You're going to need to take them out before sending them to be graded anyway.
