I think there are potentially good buys lurking among common-date no-motto half eagles. As the bullion value has increased the price difference between no-motto and with-motto coins has shrunk. This coin caught my eye so I laid out the cash. How do you think NGC graded it?

I really have no idea, but to take a stab at it. She's a beauty but there are a lot of marks. I'd almost say that someone tried to clean her. I'll say MS63 with details.

I'd guess AU-50. Lots of detail, especially on the reverse; but I dont see enough luster to go higher. If it wasnt for the detail, I'd say 45.
Here is my NO MOTTO type example. It graded XF-40 by PCI.

Good graders at CCF, as usual. Luster in-hand is somewhat stronger than shown in the images and surfaces look nice and original. I'm pleased with this purchase!

GReat looking coin. I always thought when I start collecting all those "bag" marks made the coins look less in the grading world. I figured tht out quick after a little of reading
Rest in Peace

Does the shield actually have cross-hatching like that? Maybe I just haven't been paying attention, but I don't recall ever seeing that before.

Biggfredd, that's a good question. I never noticed it until I inspected the picture. Next time I get to my safe deposit I'll pull the coin out and check.
