Hi all!

I have spent a couple days coin roll searching and noticed something that appears odd. I'm kind of a rookie when it comes to roll searching. So, I'm not sure if it's normal or not.

I have found a ton of 1981 pennies that were very bright colored. It got to the point that even with the date side down I could tell they were 1981s. Anyone know why this is?

Also, today was the third box from Brinks that I opened and it was the same thing with the 81s.

I've had similar experiences. What you have done is to run into a cache of coins - that is anomalous in some way. Maybe someone had a stash of coins in a cupboard somewhere that he acquired during the year 1981. He finds the misplaced coins when he gets ready to move - dumps them in a Coinstar machine. Brinks rolls them up and sends them off to the bank . That's where you come in!

Coin caches have different personalities. If you come across hand wrapped rolls, they are more likely to contain foreign coins, slugs, heavily corroded coins and DIMES believe it or not!

In my experience, coins that come from $25 Brinks boxes, are very average... containing less really good or bad coins. You'll find the hand wrapped rolls, to be the most freakish (either good or bad). Sometimes just one year, sometimes all shiny coins 5 - 10 years back etc... And sometimes mostly corroded junk, that just wouldn't go through the Coinstar machine.

At least with the Brinks boxes you avoid the corroded junk !

LastGold, You would think that I would avoid the corroded junk with the Brinks boxes. I came across at least three out of three boxes that were so corroded there was no telling what they were.

The cache thing sounds like a good possibility with one exception. I got two boxes at one bank one day, and the other box from a different bank the next day. I suppose that would be possible.

I did keep a few out of the pile just because they were really close to PF-65. I also used the best one to upgrade.

Thanks for the info!

That happens to me quite often...I'll find a ton of 60's bright red or just a particular year where somebody probably dumped a BU roll into the counter.

Hey guys. I'm guessing that is what happened in this case. I'm wishing I had done the roll searching a long time ago. I'm not a very patient guy and this is turning out to be a great way to collect great specimens from every year and mint in a short amount of time.

So far the oldest out of three boxes is a 1916D. Really worn out though. Still kind of cool to me.
