I'm thinking about buying an expensive error coin that is silver, but it has a toned square on the reverse from tape?

It looks toned so I don't think acetone is the answer.

This coined is damaged in my opinion and I know dipping is taboo, but......?

Do I just pass on the coin, or buy and live with the square, or do the taboo of light dipping which I don't want to do.

Any sugestions?

I think I'll pass but.....

what about thumbing the coin, reducing the grade possibly, but possibly getting rid of the straight lines?

I still think I'll pass...... just wanted opinions.

Hi errorcoins

There is the option of conservation,, its market acceptable and the coin will be slabbed and graded . If the value is in the particular coin for such treatment, then the option could be considered.

Just a couple of ideas
If the coin is damaged that should make it a lot cheaper
I personally could not live with a damaged coin
So depending on the price I would ask my friend what to do with it
because let's face it we got several chemistry trained people on this forum and there is nothing secret those expensive conservation people can do that a good chemist / metallurgist cannot do either
So it is stripping and perhaps accelerated natural retoning
And in the end it comes down to lots and lots of previous experience
preferably on worhtless coins

I don't think I could live with the mark.
The coin is priced less because of the mark.
This is not a one of a kind error.
I could buy the same error on another coin, it would just be way more expensive for the grade.

I will pass on this one hoping to find another.

Just out of curiosity, what is the error, and on which coin?
