Can anyone recommend a reference guide or on-line site for grading and pricing Mexican Pesos? For both silver and modern bimetallic.

I tried the web no such luck as you already know. The next thing is to go to any auction house and see what the coins sold for. Most will have a grade attached and price. There are web sites that now sell wold coin books on CD now. This site is cool http://numismaster.com/ta/inside_nu...nPriceGuides. There is a monthly subscription price of $9.99. I hope this helps. Thanks, I found that too. I'll have to go back to the book stores to see what they have.

Thanks, it'll get me half way there. Anyone know if there's a photo-grade for Mexican Silver?

The only reference I know that has made an effort to "photo-grade" is a 1963 book by Ulan "Condition Grading of Mexico's Modern Coins". This one lists photos by type of Mexican coins from 1905 to 1960, most of the silver issues except four or five types. the book is not rare, so you should find one without difficulty.

Rarity and condition of 20th century coins are discussed extensively in Richard Long's Availability of 20th Century Mexican Coins, but few photos and it is outdated.

Krause's prices for Mexico and world coins, as I have stated elsewhere, should be used only as a reference and a dangerous one, as prices have not moved in most coins in years... try purchasing with their prices for Spanish Colonial coins above Fine or in the case of 20th century coins most prices are too high for common pieces, alternatives?

Best for varieties in modern bimetallic coins and also a Price Guide for 20th-21st century Mexican coins can be found in "Guía ilustrada de precios de la moneda mexicana moderna 1905 al presente" by Carlos Amaya, it is bilingual but difficult to obtain.

The Amaya book is very good, I got mine from Carlos himself. The postage from Mexico was more than the cost of the book. Don Bailey publishes prices (1905 to date) in Coin World once or twice a year. It is probably the most up to date price guide around, and Don knows Mexican coins. You can check his web site for retail prices. "North American Coins and Prices" is published yearly and is an ok reference.

My most used books for first reform coinage (1905-1992) are "The Encyclopedia of Modern Mexican Coins" by Hanks, and "A Guide Book of Mexican Coins" by Buttrey and Hubbard. Hanks has good pictures of overdates, discussion of relative rarity, and a guide to fakes. Buttrey-Hubbard, is a very good guide. Hanks' prices are totaly out of date, but Buttrey-Hubbard, published in 1989 is surprisingly good.

My friends, me amigos, trying to find the books is the hardest part. Is there a website in Mexico that I can order from?

Unfortunately, not really.

If you are interested in the Carlos Amaya Priceguide (around 100 dollars + postage), the Mexico City Numismatic Convention is on wednesday and maybe Carlos Amaya will be there, so I will ask for his email and then come back to this thread with info.

For Ulan's Condition Grading and Hanks' Encyclopedia make a periodic search on ebay. Maybe, I can get you the Hanks...

But Buttrey-Hubbard's 1989 (6th edition) is quite scarce.

As long as it's a hard bound book and is up to your standards. Yes, let me know.

Good news, Carlos Amaya is preparing a new version of his Price Guide with more coins and varieties, updated to last year. It will be hardbound, and it will be available in may this year. Now his email, I did not get, so maybe tomorrow.

As far as photo grading I do not know. Getting a ball park grade
is obtainable with a little practice.
Maybe http://(131231) Not Allowed - Auto-Removed /
can help some with Id'ing/prices.
