*** Moved by Staff to a more appropriate forum. ***The pawn shop down the road has a bunch of Indian Head Pennies for $3 each. I am going to be ordering my Red Book, but until then I can't look them up. Any dates that would be worth more than $3 each? I really know nothing about them, are all of them worth at least a couple bucks? Thanks guys! Once I get the book, the questions will stop, I swear!

At our shop we have some nice Indians in a bucket for $1 and another $2 .. there are some nice coins for not a lot of money. Enjoy coins... I have for over 30 years, and learned a bit along the way. This forum is a great place to get help/advice. I have watched the answers here, pretty solid stuff. RedBook is the "Bible" of coin collecting... I still use it everyday in the shop. REMEMBER the prices in there are retail, and they are over a year old... they print the book very early in the year. Some of the coins priced in there could be trading for more even wholesale levels. Some would NEVER sell at the prices listed.... just remember it's a guide, with that and others you should do well. Knowledge is Power in this hobby. Welcome to the hobby.... and this site.

Well, I'm not an expert on the Indian Heads. I do have a book though. Here are the ones that I came up with that may help you out. I would also take a magnifier too. 1859 1860 1861 1862 1863 1864 1864 (with L) 1866-1878 1885 1908s 1909s These are lowest grade prices above $5.00. The "L" for the 1864 is located at the "nape" of the neck and will more than likely need a magnifier to see. All other dates are worth more for better conditions. I'm using "The Official Blue Book" by "Whitman" 68th Edition*2011 I prefer to use this book when buying so that I can bargain with the sellers for better prices. Basically the "Blue book"is wholesale and the " Red Book" is retail. Hope this helps.

It all depends on the condition. If no actual damage, scratches, dents, dings, pitting, environmental damage, cleaning etc, then I would say most, if not all Indians head would be worth at least a few bucks, unless worn smooth. You will probably just find a bunch of 1880s, 90s and 1900s in there. It may be worth it to look for repunched dates as they are fairly common in the series. You can go ahead and pick some up and it probably won't be a bad deal, but I would wait and educate yourself a little more before buying random IHCs.

Also if you can read the word "liberty" (or at least most of it) on the headband of the IHC and it doesn't have any of the damage DavidZerbato mentioned, it is a good indication that it is worth more than $3.

Tdouglass - Like me, you have to learn to tell if a coin has been cleaned or not. I don't know what condition those coins are in a pawn shop.

Keep asking the questions. I have a bunch of 1890s and 1900s Indian heads in GOOD condition. I talked to a dealer around here and he would pay about 50 cents each. I thought they might be worth 80 or 90 cents. He said he would sell me some for 75 cents. So I think the demand for GOOD condition common indians might be a little week. The key dates are a different story.

I generally sell my common "goods" for a buck a piece...even have a standing offer from one guy to take all I get at that price.

tdouglass - Have you looked for any coin shops, coin shows and/or coin clubs in your area? Enjoy!
