Ok I have an 1849 Large Cent and I was doing some research on it because the one I have has been in my family for a few generations but the coin is laminated in gold. I contacted the Philadelphia Mint and I spoke to someone who knew some history because he was a collector himself and he told me that some coins were privately issued by individuals not connected with the U.S Mint in 1849 with a gold lamination to commemorate the 1849 gold rush. I was never able to get a value to it. I don't even think its real gold(it could be)but either way it has protected it from any degradation or damage. If this proves to devalue this coin I would appreciate any ideas on how to remove the lamination without damaging the coin.

Honestly, it's hard to see the color and problem with those pics...

Given the wear apparent, I'd grade this coin as fine. Even if it's a VF, I don't see removal of the gold coating as much appreciating the value of this coin. Here's a suggestion ... Acquire a normal 1849 large cent and attach some "year of the gold rush history" to their display. Share what you've learned with other collectors; maybe, even at a local coin club meeting.

I agree, the gold laminated would not add any value to the coin except for the family that received it in 1849 like yourself. It would be considered Post Mint Damage to a collector because it was done after the coin left the mine so instead of adding value it would probably do the opposite unless it were for just a curiosity

I appreciate the advice, even though I would really like to remove the coating, I think just keeping it the way it is and adding the History I found about it is the way to go. I do have another 1849 but the bust on it seems a lot smaller for some odd reason. Anyway thanks again!

Problem is that "history" is bunk. there were never any gold plated large cents made, nor were there any 1849 large cents privately made outside the US Mint. This is just and 1849 large cent that someone plated years after it was made.
