Hello everyone, can someone please help, I am trying to discover the value of a William and Mary coin that has come in to my possession. My dad who has sadly passed away found this brass (I think its brass) coin laying in a pile of rubble 40 years ago, he told me it was rare and valuable, I think he was right about its rareness because all the examples of William and Mary coin I have managed to find on the net have images of both Mary and William stamped on one side and some form of symbol on the flip side of the coin, yet this coin my dad found has an image of the king on one side and his queen on the other, please view the scanned images of this coin, any advice as to its value and rareness or even what it actually is would be much appreciated, thank you.

Hi LordBragle, welcome to our Coin Community Family. Hope you stick around a while. I hope your coin is valuable, but you may have to post the pics again, I don't think your scans worked. Steve

All the official coins of Wiliam and Mary, the dual monarchs of Britain over the period 1689-1694, show them side-by-side on the same side. I'd say your 'coin' may well be either a commemorative medallion or token of some sort.
That's not to say it's not going to be rare, or valuable - people still collect such things.

Welcome to the forum LB, before we can do much more additional data would be needed, along with a pic if possible.

Thank you all for you response and interest everyone, I'm sorry the images didn't go; I try again to send them. As I held the coin in my fingers and rolled it over I noticed that both king and queens heads are orientated correctly as each face of the coin shows, this means that the heads are at 180 degrees to each other, this obviously was intended when the coin was made, maybe it is indicative that the coin may be a medallion or token as Sap points out, I have to say that I know absolutely nothing of the science and history of coinage other than I miss the feel of it in my pocket and am always disconcerted and reluctant when I try to use my high tech plastic currency, I also have fond memories of the days when we had silver sixpences and threpanybits with angled edges and how these coins packed some weight at the sweetshop. I hope these images go this time. Image: W-J.jpg97.22 KB

Ah, that picture answers the mystery. See the tiny writing at the base of the portrait? Looks like it says "LGL RECHENPF.". "Rechenpfennig" is the German word for "jeton" or "card counter", so I suspect that's what we've got here - a German-made gaming token. It probably dates from after the reign of William and Mary - I'd guess anywhere from the mid-1700's to the mid-1800's.
As I said before, it's still collectable, but perhaps not quite as "rare and valuable" as your dad thought.
