Hi everyone! Several weeks ago there were several threads started discussing using vinegar to reclaim dates on Buffalo nickels and I responded that I would give it a try. I've been soaking 7 for the last two weeks. I would consider all as dateless or completely illegible and unreadable with *maybe* something that might look like a date if using your imagination. Of the 7, two were far too gone to recover anything and four recovered common dates. I am please to report that I did recover a 1914 date with the last one. My specific technique: Used a jelly jar with a screw top lid. It's wide enough that all seven nickels lay flat on the bottom without overlapping. Started out face up. Every other day I would drain the jar and flip them over and fill it back up with the same vinegar.

The recovered date on the 1914 is weak and I think it was right at the border line of being completely lost due to wear. I now have another 7 soaking and will repeat the process. I'll see what comes out of this load.

Sure is a neat trick for dateless nickels and I surely thank everyone for discussing this! Looks like I'm going to have to dig out the Buffalo folder and start reviewing it for fillers!

I've got about 200 soaking right now. I think I have about every '20 minted.

Fioti, do you flip them? I was hoping to revive some details such as the horn or a possible mint mark. This second batch I'm going to leave face up.
