I picked this up at a local dealer this week. I thought it was interesting just because of the date. I know alot of 8 Reales coins are fakes etc. This thing has been cleaned and dipped like crazy. What is everyones opinion, do you think it is a copy or real? I have included 3 pictures, one of the obverse, reverse and edge. Thanks for looking David

Ok, I think before any thing about "is it real" can be stated we need lots more information. 1776 is one of the most counterfeited dates so it is possible we are looking at a very good copy.
On the edge there should be two places were the design over laps or does not match up. Are these two places directly across from one another? Can you show us in a picture?
Can we see a close up pic of the date,(the "7"s look odd to me)?
How about a closer look at the "carolus" also?

This would be a big help, there are just some dates that mostly show up as fakes......1776 it one of them!

I did the magnet test, it doesn't stick. Here are some of the pictures you asked for odentheviking. If they are not good enough let me know.

Sorry to say it sure looks like a cast copy to me! Did you ever get a chance to weight it? What about a SG test?
