Hi everyone, I'm a big currency collector, but I do have some coins in my collection that I enjoy (a completed Lincoln Penny collection that was left to me, some nickels, some Morgan dollars). My question for everyone here is: If I was going to start roll searching, what denomination would you recommend? Are pennies the best place to start? What about quarters? Does anyone roll search quarters? I'm not looking to strike it rich with loads of silver or anything... just looking to start a book and fill some holes. Thanks!

If you wanna fill some holes... Jeff's is the only way to go! with about 250 in dimes you can fill a 64-present book as well. That is where I would start if I were you.

I recommend searching Lincoln Cents and Jefferson nickels mostly. You'll get the most rewards and nice little treasures more often with these two denominations. And you can fill A LOT of holes from circulation with these two. Qtrs......well......little to no silver even if you WERE interested in that. You can complete a Date Set "50 State Qtr." folder from circulation quite easily, and mostly in BU condition too, if you keep at it. It's harder, of course, but you can also complete a "P&D" folder of the 50 St. Qtrs. Or start with the new America The Beautiful Qtr. program that began last year. Dimes........IMO, still difficult to do much with these, whether silver hunting OR putting a circulation folder together. But one certainly CAN put a circulation folder together if you stay committed to it......and if your eyes are in good shape (with the small dates and mintmarks !) But to me, definately the Cents and Nickels are the most fun !

I've come within 5 of an entire '38-'64 group from one Jeff box. Maybe not MS, but you can upgrade from there on.

I enjoy searching rolls of cents. An entire box is only $25 face value so it doesn't take a lot of money for hours and hours of enjoyment.
Halves are also really popular.

Searching nickels will give you the best chance at assembling a complete a series.

I think of all denominations, the 65-present FDR dime set is the easiest to put together from circulation (with the BIG exception being the 96-W key that was only in mint sets), followed by the 65-present Washington quarters.

I put in a vote for my favorite ... USA nickel roll searching.
With nickel rolls you can find a complete circulation strike set 1938 - 2010 ... and with enough paitence ...
You will find silver (1942-1945)... you will find buffalo and even possibly Liberty V coins .... and lots of foreign coins as well.
I am now at 238,800 nickels searched ... and very much enjoying the hunt.

I love my cents and filling my dansco 7100. I bought a really old uncompleted set at a pawn shop and I'm working on upgrading those and filling holes :D

I have to say quarters. They are easier for me to see. We started looking for the 50 states then the territories and we have several complete sets now. It has been fun and rewarding. We found some silver and early dates. Pennies and dimes gave me a headache searching for the dates and mints. Try them all. you will find out what turns you on. LOL

i love looking through lincolns, but I am also going to start roll searching nickels. so i'd choose one of them. probably nickels if you already have a complete lincoln set.

I would search a few of everything and see what you like best. For me it was lincolns...I can look at $100 a week and never get tired of it.But give me a bag of quarters and I'm bored in an hour.

It really depends on your goals. I look through everything and I search for Key dates, errors, silver. But I find my favorite coin of all is the Lincoln Cent. Just a nice coin. I never get tired of looking at them. Alot of things to look for too.

I had the same question that you did at first.. which denomination to start hunting? I narrowed it down to cents and nickels and decided on cents. The $25 brinks boxes are easily affordable, provide for hours of fun with the family, and its easy to get your friends involved, and there is a multitude of info on cent varieties in various books and websites. I'm new to all of this, and I'm on my 3rd box of cents, and I can say it is really FUN, and thats what its all about.

I enjoy getting 2 boxes at once, usually pennies and nickels. I do that for a couple reasons. If I get a box of shield cents, I still have a box of nickels to search through. Sometimes I get a more exciting box of pennies, sometimes nickels are more exciting. I've done a box of dimes, quarters, and halves. I got two silver dimes and two silver halves. The box of quarters was good for starting my State Quarter books.
