Hello,
I've been a collector of coins and recently found an interest to start up my collection. I've been looking at so many coins and really have an interest in this particular series. I'd like to start with a $50 Buffalo coin and then slowly collect a set. The only condition is that it is PCGS and it is rated 70. I do not want any other company - that's my only preference. I've researched about "First Strike" coins and am not interested in that.
Question - Is this a coin to worth while to collect now, enjoy and hold on to? I plan on keeping this set for 25+ years. I've been researching this Buffalo Coin "series" for quite a bit and narrowed it down to the 2008-W mintage. This particular design, in my humble opinion is gorgeous and I like the fact it's gold. I currently am contemplating purchasing this coin below. Thanks for any input / advice & guidance!

Honestly its a waste of money to get ms70 or pr70 coins, almost all the 1oz buffalos ms70 or pr70 are going for 150+ over spot and is no different from ms69 coins

Thanks for the perspective - I'll keep that in mind as well. If anyone else would like to comment, please do so. Thanks

I concur with the cost savings of 69 vs 70. You are right about the "First Strike" stuff, it is just marketing fluff. The 2008W fractional Buffalos(1/10, 1/4, and 1/2oz.) are pricey but they have very low mintages.

I would consider a raw piece with all original government packaging (OGP). The fractionals are so pricey, the best advice is to avoid them unless you can find a really good deal.

I think it very nice that you ask for our opinion on this matter, but in the end it is your collection and I am sure you will follow your heart. "But!", since you asked.........here is my story.
Around 2001 I started to buy gold as an investment. I only bought bullion, but soon picked up a couple of the graded/slabbed AGE's graded MS-69 as I thought they would have more value later. Well most all that gold is gone now, but I did keep the 2 slabbed AGE's and two Maple leafs,(a 1979 w/Young Queen and a 2001 w/older Queen). The ones that I regret selling were the Aussie Zodiacs, Year of the Horse, Year of the Tiger, etc.... I will often take out the two Maple Leafs and look them over, magnify them, and then put them back in the safe. The two AGE's pretty much just stay in the safe as I can not really get to them, touch them or look them over through the slabb. I just traded out some silver for some older gold coins and I am really enjoying them right now.
I guess my point is you never really know what is going to get your attention down the line. And if you pay that top dollar for ms70's then your eye turns, you could end up holding on to something,as an investment, that really does not rev your motor! Its only an investment if you are willing to sell it.
But just like what was said on another thread, some kids liked the G. I. Joe..... and some kids really liked the box that the toy came in!

Interesting story. I have been still researching the gold buffalo coins and I hope to make a purchase soon. I'd like to start with this collection as I feel this coin has two qualities I like. 1. It is gold and 2. It has a low mintage. Two components that do not hurt in the long term. Those are my thoughts and my perspective. I'd appreciate anyone else's. Thanks for all the responses. I'm putting down some $$$ so I want to be very sure!
