I have what is either a very rare 1853-O no arrows, half dollar or an 1858-O. The date has been damaged and it is very difficult to tell just what it is. I realize that the odds of it being the fourth known 1853-O are extremely low but want to see what you experts have to say. The coin was found by my deceased Father when he cleaned out his parents home after they died in 1960.
I have a decent picture of the coin it but apparently it is too big to post here. I can try emailing it to anyone who would like to take a look? How can I reduce the picture size so that it can be posted here?

You could upload the photo to photobucket.com or a similar site and give us the link for a larger photo.

Can you see the 5 in the date? 1853's 5 is slanted; 1858's is not. An 1853 will weigh 13.3 grams, 1858 will be 12.4. 1853 will have 141 or 143 reeds, 1858 will have 140.

That's what I'm thinking. Upper curve appears to be too large for a 3 or an 8.

On the NGC forum I was able to post pictures and point out positional differences of the date that prove it is NOT an 1853-O no arrows. Sorry oldvet. My post on the NGC forum (The large picture is the best of the three known 53-O no arrows halves from the Stack's archives.) It is definitely NOT the 1853-O no arrows. Start at the top left corner of the 5 and draw a line straight up. Note where that line crosses the folds of the drapery above it on his coin and on the real 1853-O no arrows. On his coin there are two heavy folds in the drapery that come together as a V with a flattened loop of drapery under them. The corner of the 5 on his coin is just about at the point of that V and under the center of that flattened oval. On the real 53-O no arrows the corner of the 5 is well right of the point of the V and to the right of the flattened oval.

Thanks condor 101 This is the best explanation of why it is not an 1853-O that I've been able to get in more than 50 years! Your opinion reinforces several other opinions including not an opinion but a fact that the weight is not correct for an 1853
Dad and I suspected all along that it is an 1858 or 185X something else, perhaps purposely damaged to make it appear like an 1853?
