think Jessie James was in Kansas, or mid USA don't think he saw much Carson City dollars...the need for money was great back then, but it seems nobody really liked having to carry all the wieght of 20 Morgans to holding one $20 double eagle....thats why that sat in bank vaults...IMAGINE...if you had $100 bucks back then....would 5 double eagles feel better or 100 Morgans in your pocket..?

I doubt if Jesse James ever stole very many Morgan dollars from any mint. He only committed a few robberies after 1876 and most of them were in the Missouri or Alabama area. (Hardly "wild West") In most cases he would probably have preferred to steal paper money than bags of silver dollars because of the difficulty of transporting them. What coin would really symbolize the wild west? Probably a CC Seated quarter or half dollar. After about 1853 silverdollars didn't really circulate (until at least the late 1870's), the gold coins were really too large a denomination to be of much use in everyday commerce. Money was much more valuable back then and most everyday transactions were probably in the 25 cent range or less.

I just said thats what I picture in my mind not that I have a picture of him doing it. When I think about the wild west I think about the outlaws and when I think about the coins of the wild west I think about Carson City coins and since most of my thoughts seem t revolve around Morgans, thats the coin I envision when thinking about the wild west. That is why I said I have a one track mind, because it usually revolves around Morgans even if it may not be factual thinking, its just what crosses my mind when thinking about it

I highly recommend "A Guide Book of Morgan silver dollars, A Complete History and Price Guide"; 3rd Edition by Q. David Bowers. I've read it twice and probably will read again in the future. The cost is $19.95.

I would love to know what kind of stories my Widow's Mites could tell if they could talk.

I know, Wyatt Earp had it in his pocket during the shootout at the O.K. Corral, then went to the Bird Cage and got drunk.
