Not sure what I got here. Appears to be bronze. Has the picture of Graf Ferdinand Von Zeppelin on the front with the letters and date GEB 1838. I read somewhere that Graf F V Z sold these similar to stock in order to raise capital for his company.

On the back it appears to be commemorating the Journey of the LZ III from Friedrichshafen to hamburg and includes information stating 700 kilometers and the dates 5/31 and 1/6 1912.

It's about the same size as a modern day $1 US silver eagle and weighs 24.4 grams. There is pitting on both sides of the coin, but it is more pronounced on the front. The medal appears to be in very good condition so that leads me to think that it might be a replica or a commemorative edition. Any idea what this is? Sorry about the photo quality. Took them with my phone.

Such medals were issued on various "Zeppelin related" occasions. The LZ 3 was one of the first airships, financed primarily by a lottery and by Zeppelin's private funds, and co-sponsored by (Nationalflugspende) donations. Apparently there are several versions, with different diameters and probably compositions, e.g. here http://www.aerophil.de/auktionen.ht...255&aucId=24 (lot 1935) or there http://www.felzmann.de/de/katalog-a...IjExOCI7fQ==. And here is another image ... Sorry, that is pretty much all I can contribute here.

"700 kilometers in 10 hours" - probably an amazing speed at that time. :)
