Hello all, I've been trying everything to get some info on this Chinese coin or charm and seem to be running out of luck and sources to try. My guess its a charm because it has symbols on the one side and a pictoral on the back. My father was givin it by a young Chinese boy when he was in the service near Bejing. It is about 5 inches in diameter. What I am trying to find out is really nothing to do with monetary value but is it a coin or charm first, what the symbols represent, and maybe the significance of the pictoral. I have tried some places but seem to get no response. Would anyone here have a clue or some other resource I could ask? Pictures attached, thanks.

It's definitely not a coin, and probably dates from about the time your father acquired it. It appears to be superficially similar to the Boxer Rebellion coin-charm posted in this recent thread. At least, the Big Dipper constellation is in the same place. I don't know what the critter on the left is - it seems to be a turtle with a long tail.

This Chinese charm is based on a coin cast during the reign (557-589) of Emperor Xuan during the Southern Dynasties.

The inscription reads tai huo liu zhu which translates as "large coin six zhu".

An example of a tai huo liu zhu coin may be seen here: http://primaltrek.com/chinesecoins....rn_Dynasties

The "critter" on the reverse side is the Chinese god Xuanwu. Xuanwu was depicted as a tortoise encircled by a snake who later evolved into the Daoist god Zhenwu, the "Perfected Warrior", associated with healing and protection.

Xuanwu may be seen at the bottom of this charm: http://primaltrek.com/sword.html#tw...ossed_swords
