I was looking through my small handful of Canadian coins today and noticed that one of my 4 nickels is not the same color as the others. Was this normal (alloy or toning)? Or has something (chemical) caused the 1953 nickel to look bluer than my earlier and later nickels? Photo has not been enhanced...just cut, and pasted.

Thanks for looking at this post!

Hi, Nexda, your 1953 Nickel is 'Steel', that's why it looks that way.

Thank you for the explanation. I knew about the U. S. 1943 steel/zinc pennies due to war shortages of copper, but I didn't know Canada also minted steel coins. Is there an explanation? Strike at the nickel mines? Korean Conflict? Maybe I should do a little reseach, eh?

It was the Korean War, we had a fairly large stake and presence there. So yes, a wartime nickel just as WW II nickels were various compositions.

Thank you for the explanation. I thought the nickel had gone through the wash with bluing or something. And, special thanks for the link to the Coins and Canada site!

Thank you for the most generous welcome! Your eyes are just fine, that's exactly what it is according to the info in the link that Yoti posted.

You're right! I do love this forum. There is so much information and a lot of fun knowledgeable people here who don't mind answering questions that have probably been answered before.

Thank you. You saved me the trouble of asking, "What's a tombac?"

You saved me the task of running a search on AOL's Google, which can be a frustrating at times. I probably would not have guessed the Korean War if not for a high school history teacher who lectured on Canada's important role in Korea. Funny how some bits and pieces of things stay with you for many decades.

And, thank you all for taking the time to post. I'm much richer in knowledge having that blue 1953 nickel!
