Hello all,

I am beginning to take a serious interest in Anglo Saxon coinage. For those of you with experience, what titles would you recommend to a beginning AS collector?

Thanks!

There is a lot of books on the Subject out there. A few good reference books on Amazon for under £5 that have some good material. Obviously Spink 2011 will have a good foundation on market prices. Depending on what particular part of Anglo Saxon coins you end up specialising in, there are many specialist Academic texts around. A careful google search should turn up a lot of them.

Much depends on where your interest goes to. As said above, the Spink 'Coins of England & the United Kingdom' (2011 edition is the latest) would give a good overview as to what exists and an indication of general price ranges. Then would depend on your budget! If funds per coin are quite modest, perhaps look at, say, Aethelred II, Cnut, Edward the Confessor - good chice of types, mints and moneyers and coins reasonably plentiful. If funds permit paying large amounts, then gathering coin of each reign/issue might be practicable (although some would be just about impossible to find). There are spin-offs into Viking issues/imitations too. Or you could look at the early sceat series. Lots of choice and a huge area with loads of potential. Have fun! Chris Wren
